Overview

Backwoods Energy Services Alberta$50–$75 an hour - Temporary, Seasonal, Full-time

Backwoods Energy Services is a leading supplier of access and matting solutions, civil and forestry services, pipeline maintenance and security services in Western Canada. The company is 100% owned by the Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation and is one of the largest Indigenous owned companies in Canada.

Role Summary: Based in Edmonton, reporting to the HSE Manager, the HSE Advisor supports all divisions including Civil, Forestry, Matting, Mechanical, Security, and Logistics in implementing the Backwoods HSE Management System. Travel up to 50% of the time to various sites in Alberta may be required.

Responsibilities
  • Drive and promote the Backwoods mission and culture.
  • Support Corporate HSE in the development, revisions, and implementation of Corporate and Divisional HSE Programs, Procedures and Practices.
  • Proactively coach workers in safety performance and lead by example.
  • Visit assigned projects weekly or be assigned full-time to a project.
  • Participate in weekly Corporate HSE Meetings.
  • Develop and implement project/site specific training requirements for all Divisions.
  • Provide support to employees and subcontractors on training, document reviews, and form completion in Backwoods Online HSE Management System.
  • Support employees through the Backwoods Modified Work Program.
  • Track, monitor and report divisional compliance to established HSE performance metrics.
  • Facilitate emergency response drills with project/site leadership as required.
  • Participate in Toolbox Talks and safety meetings at Backwoods projects.
  • Communicate relevant HSE information to supervisors and divisional leadership.
  • Review and provide coaching on FLHAs to employees and supervisors.
  • Document, track, and monitor corrective actions in the HSE Management System.
  • Respond to HSE issues across divisions; flash report and investigate incidents.
  • Work with divisional leadership and the HSE Manager to address HSE concerns and trends.
  • Schedule and facilitate HSE project planning activities with Project Leadership and ensure action items are completed on time.
  • Support development and revisions to Job Hazard Assessments for positions and projects within the divisions.
  • Audit project and divisional compliance to HSE requirements and communicate non-compliance.
  • Verify the applicability and effectiveness of Hazard Assessments via site audits and incident reviews.
  • Liaise with clients on HSE matters for each division.
  • Conduct worksite and focused inspections against KPI targets.
  • Verify subcontractor management and compliance with the Subcontractor Management Program.
  • Verify commercial vehicle operator compliance with the CVSA Program.
  • Provide site-specific orientation to new employees at yards and worksites.
  • Provide additional project admin support and perform additional duties as required.
Qualifications
  • 5+ years’ experience in HSE, Environmental, construction and/or pipeline experience is an asset.
  • Degree, Diploma or Certificate in OH&S or related education; equivalencies considered.
  • Experience with commercial vehicle requirements (provincial NSC/Trucking) is an asset.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
