Job summary

Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Backend Engineer, Payments based in Canada.

This role offers the opportunity to build reliable financial infrastructure that supports money movement at global scale.

You will design and maintain APIs, services, and distributed systems capable of processing billions of payment-related requests.

Working across payments, risk, infrastructure, and product teams, you will help develop solutions that serve both enterprises and growing businesses.

The position combines backend engineering, large-scale system design, production problem-solving, and continuous improvement.

You will contribute to a highly collaborative engineering environment while maintaining a strong focus on reliability, efficiency, and user experience.

The role also provides opportunities to mentor other engineers and influence engineering standards, tooling, and development practices.

You will have significant ownership and autonomy while solving complex problems across modern financial technology systems.

Accountabilities
  • Scope, design, build, and maintain reliable, efficient APIs, backend services, and large-scale systems supporting billions of money movement requests.
  • Develop and enhance platforms responsible for balance management and funds accessibility for enterprises and small and medium‑Sized businesses.
  • Debug, investigate, and resolve critical production issues across multiple services and layers of the technology stack.
  • Collaborate with product, infrastructure, risk, and other cross‑functional teams to design and deliver new capabilities at scale.
  • Contribute to engineering standards, internal tooling, development processes, and practices that improve reliability and developer productivity.
  • Mentor engineers, provide technical guidance, and support the growth and development of peers.
  • Participate effectively in a distributed and hybrid engineering environment, maintaining clear communication and strong collaboration across teams.
  • Apply sound engineering judgment to balance scalability, reliability, maintainability, and customer needs.
Requirements
  • 2–12+ years of professional software engineering experience, excluding internships and co‑op placements.
  • Strong software development and coding skills in any programming language, with the ability and willingness to learn new languages as needed.
  • Experience designing, developing, and maintaining backend services, APIs, or large‑scale distributed systems.
  • Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work effectively across multiple technical and business workstreams.
  • Ability to operate with a high degree of autonomy, ownership, and responsibility in a fast‑moving engineering environment.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset with a focus on solving complex problems and creating high‑quality experiences for internal and external users.
  • Interest in working as a generalist across different technologies and technical stacks.
  • Strong debugging, analytical, and problem‑solving capabilities.
  • Experience with large‑scale financial tracking systems is preferred.
  • Practical knowledge of cloud‑based technologies and services is an advantage, including gRPC, GraphQL, Docker, Kubernetes, AWS, or comparable platforms.
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly and contribute constructively to team decision‑making.
