Job summary

  • Self-starter with proven analytical skills and a proven track record in a solutions-oriented approach to underwriting that drives profitable growth.
  • Experience working within a guideline framework, underwriting authorities and protocols.
  • Demonstrated broker relationships with global, national and regional brokers.

  • Strong communication and time management skills.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a large and complex portfolio of Construction business, significantly contributing to profitable growth.
  • Act as a senior technical resource and referral point for complex Construction risks and underwriting strategy.
  • Collaborate with risk services, actuary, claims for profitable growth through research and relationship building.
  • Maintain a quality pipeline of prospects through targeted marketing, cross-selling and account rounding with brokers.
  • Ensure proper risk selection, exposure review, and adherence to underwriting guidelines and strategies.
  • Lead development of underwriting talent through coaching and knowledge sharing.

The Opportunity:

We're looking for an AVP, Executive Underwriter to join our growing Construction team! This role will be accountable for underwriting and profitably growing a Construction portfolio spanning property and casualty lines on an annual and project basis — focusing on P&C commercial package, automobile, contractors' equipment as well as the possibility of builders risk and wrap-up. The successful incumbent will also play a key role in coaching, mentoring, and training other members of the team to ensure their ongoing professional development. They will manage relationships with select broker partners and clients and provide valuable input into regional strategies and other operational improvements.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Manage a large and complex portfolio of Construction business, significantly contributing to the segment's profitable growth.
  • Act as a senior technical resource and referral point for complex Construction risks, helping shape underwriting strategy, account solutions, coverage negotiations, and profitable growth initiatives.
  • Collaborate with internal teams (risk services, actuary, claims) to achieve profitable growth through technical research and relationship building.
  • Significantly contribute to the region's new business goals by maintaining a quality pipeline of prospects through targeted marketing, cross-selling and account rounding efforts with our key broker partners.
  • Ensure proper risk selection, exposure review, setting of profitable terms and conditions, file documentation, adherence to underwriting guidelines and strategies.
  • Lead the ongoing development of underwriting talent through coaching, mentoring, referral support, and knowledge sharing, while contributing to portfolio planning, broker strategy, and the long-term growth of the Construction practice.
  • Coach, mentor, and train colleagues on underwriting, business development, negotiation skills, and other necessary soft skills to ensure their ongoing professional development.
  • Responsible for relationship management with key brokers, clients, and prospects to ensure exceptional service and gather market intelligence to expand Liberty's product and service offerings.
  • Collaborate and manage Construction account solutions while highlighting differentiators in product offerings and value propositions.
  • Provide recommendations towards regional growth strategies, broker, and client plans.
  • Propose alternate solutions to existing underwriting processes to improve service and simplify our business, and act as an early adopter of new systems and processes.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and development through attendance at industry events, relevant seminars, and courses, and learning from existing Liberty expertise.
  • Other duties and projects as assigned.

Target Hiring Range:

CAD $140,000-$190,000 per year (base salary).

This range represents the expected annual base salary for this role, however, offers above the published maximum may be approved with appropriate business authorization. Final offers will be determined based on each candidate's qualifications, relevant experience, internal equity, and the needs of the role. The posted range does not include variable compensation (bonus), allowances, or benefits. We encourage all qualified candidates to apply.
