What You’ll Be Doing:
- Designing mechanical systems for robots, assembly systems, production gauges, error proofs, and assembly jigs.
- Analyzing engineering drawings and specifications to determine shape, dimensions, hardness, etc., in the development of equipment, processes, and products.
- Performing engineering calculations related to strength of materials, speeds, horsepower, temperature, pressure, force, etc.
- Ensuring designs and systems comply with applicable standards (e.g., machine safety, GAA, customer-specific).
- Reviewing electrical requirements with electrical designers and machine operations with the project team.
- Selecting appropriate components for mechanical assemblies and creating requisitions with delivery dates.
- Producing working drawings, detail drawings, and bills of materials using SolidWorks.
- Reviewing drawings for accuracy, material selection, proper machining techniques, finishes, hardness, etc.
- Assisting the manufacturing team by resolving issues during build, debug, and integration of projects.
- Communicating with customers, in-house technical and engineering staff, and vendors for technical information and specifications.
- Communicating design changes to the GAA team or respective manager.
- Providing time estimates, resource requirements, and progress updates to the Design Manager and Program Manager.
- Periodically supervising the mechanical design effort on a project level and delegating tasks to a team.
- Organizing documentation, including quotes, correspondence, requisitions, drawings, schedules, etc., on projects.
- Assisting in proposals and estimating mechanical design labor hours.
- Developing design and department standards.
- Overseeing Co-op students and Junior Designers on various projects.
- Adhering to all health and safety rules and procedures.
- Coordinating continuous improvement initiatives.
- Performing other related duties as required.
What We’re Looking For:
- Degree or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering.
- 1+ years of experience in special purpose equipment and/or automation design.
- Experience with robotic cells and assembly systems (an asset).
- Proficiency in SolidWorks.
- Working knowledge of common machine shop techniques (an asset).
- Strong ability to conceptualize and create solutions for complex design requirements.
- Thorough knowledge of pneumatic systems and electrical devices (e.g., switches, load cells, LVDTs).
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Capability to give and take direction and work as part of a team.
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, at all levels of the organization.
- High level of integrity and dependability with a strong sense of urgency and results orientation.
