Job description

Associate Professor/Professor - Caribbean Geographies / Caribbean Ecologies
Position Description

The Department of Geography and Planning and the Centre for Caribbean Studies in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in the area of Caribbean ecological crises and ecological futures. This will be a joint appointment between the Department of Geography and Planning (51%) and the Centre for Caribbean Studies (49%). The appointment will be at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2027. The successful candidate will be eligible to be named the New College Professorship in Caribbean Studies for a three-year term, which is renewable following a favourable review.

Requirements and Qualifications

Applicants must have earned a PhD degree in Caribbean Studies, Geography, Climate and Society, Political Ecology, Development Studies, or related areas including interdisciplinary fields. We seek candidates conducting interdisciplinary research on the broader nexus of Caribbean ecological crises and ecological futures and the intersecting areas of food, water, health, biodiversity and economy in the Caribbean while paying close attention to their impacts on the production of place and space. We also seek scholars who address the nexus between Caribbean ecological epistemologies and just environmental futures and whose research engages with critical Caribbean environmental issues. Candidates’ research must be grounded within the Caribbean context. Experience and engagement with local communities in the Caribbean region will be an asset. Candidates must also clearly demonstrate a record of excellence in research and teaching in areas that complement and enhance existing strengths in both units and must have experience in research supervision. We seek applicants able to offer undergraduate and graduate courses that will serve the Caribbean Studies program as well as programs in Geography and Planning. We invite candidates whose application materials demonstrate past research, current projects and future plans that foreground the importance and urgency of environmental issues in the Caribbean and bring a level of intellectual curiosity, imagination and critical engagement that deepens our understanding of what’s at stake. Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence, as demonstrated by a record of sustained high-impact contributions and publications in top-ranked and field-relevant venues, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, distinguished awards and accolades for innovative work, other noteworthy activities that contribute to the visibility and prominence of the discipline, and strong endorsement by referees of high international standing. Evidence of excellence in teaching will be demonstrated through the teaching accomplishments, the teaching dossier (including the required materials outlined below), as well as strong letters of reference.

Responsibilities

Candidates will have an established international reputation and will be expected to sustain and lead innovative and independent research at the highest international level and to maintain an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program. In addition, the successful candidate will be assigned a teaching and service load.

Hiring Salary Range

Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The upper end of the salary range for this position exceeds $200,000 CAD per annum.
