Job summary

Cooke Aquaculture Inc. in Saint John, NB, is hiring an Associate Data Engineer to build and support basic data pipelines under guidance, ensuring data is extracted, transformed, and loaded accurately between systems using standard tools and SDLC practices.

You will work with foundational SQL, scripting, and data modeling, support ETL/ELT processes, monitor daily data flows, document datasets and workflows, and escalate complex issues to senior engineers as needed.

Qualifications

  • Pursuing or recently completed a diploma or degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, or related field.
  • 0–2 years in data development or ETL support or related technical co-op or internship.
  • Foundational SQL, scripting, and data modelling skills.
  • Exposure to DBT, FiveTran, Boomi and API-based integrations is a plus.

The Role

As an Associate Data Engineer, you will build and support basic data pipelines under guidance. You will help ensure data is extracted, transformed, and loaded accurately between systems using standard tools, established design patterns, and approved software development lifecycle practices.

Key Responsibilities
  • Build and test basic data pipelines under supervision using standard tools and SDLC frameworks.
  • Extract, transform, and load data from source systems following established design patterns.
  • Monitor daily data flows and troubleshoot errors or failed jobs.
  • Maintain and document datasets, workflows, and integration processes.
  • Escalate complex issues or data anomalies to senior engineers or architects.

  • Basic data pipelines are built, tested, and supported accurately under guidance.
  • Daily data flows are monitored consistently, with errors identified and escalated appropriately.
  • Datasets, workflows, and integration processes are documented clearly and kept current.

  • Learning progress is demonstrated through increased confidence with Cooke’s data platforms, tools, and engineering best practices.

Experience & Qualifications
  • Education: Currently enrolled in, or recently completed, a diploma or degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field.
  • Experience: 0-2 years in data development, ETL support, or a related technical co-op or internship.
  • Skills: Basic SQL and scripting, data modelling fundamentals, attention to detail, and eagerness to learn.
  • Organization-specific: Exposure to Cooke’s data pipelines, integration tools such as DBT, FiveTran, and Boomi, and an understanding of enterprise data standards and quality expectations.
