Position: Associate Data Engineer

Compensation Details :

  • Data Engineer 15 : Salaries typically range from $63,894 to $85,194 annually, based on qualifications and experiences, plus a performance-based incentive.

Location:

  • Export Development Canada operates in a hybrid work environment, currently requiring employees to work in the office 2 days per week. (subject to change)
  • This role can be performed from EDC’s headquarters in Ottawa or from one of our Community Hubs located in Toronto, Mississauga, Montreal, Brossard, or Laval.
  • Relocation assistance is available for candidates who meet the eligibility criteria.

Team Overview:

  • The Digital & Technology Solutions (DTS) group under the leadership of the Chief Information Officer was established in 2023 with the mission of empowering our customers and colleagues to take on the world, by seamlessly delivering secure and reliable digital experiences. Digital & Technology Solutions has set out to achieve the following objectives for EDC:
    • Define, execute, and sustain the integrated technology target state, target data model and technology operations required to enable EDC’s 2030 business transformation.
    • Establish and manage the rolling 3 Year Digital Roadmap that sequences the technology outcomes required to achieve the technology target state and facilitate its execution across all domains in the organization.
    • Keep pace with industry trends and emerging technologies, ensuring EDC has access to the digital technology tools it needs to stay relevant in the market and grow Canadian global trade.
    • Lead and ensure integrated digital, data, infrastructure, and cybersecurity implementations to create excellent customer, user, and employee experiences.
  • The Data Engineering Services team is seeking an individual that has experience in delivering, implementing, and collaborating with stakeholders to achieve the best results for EDC against its Data & Analytics strategy.
  • The Data Engineer will be responsible for delivering data through data pipelines on EDC’s data platform to meet our stakeholder’s needs. This role will be joining the team that is responsible for building out the Data Engineering practice at EDC using the latest in modern data platform technologies.

What you will be doing:

  • Design, develop, modify, deploy, and support data centric applications to meet user requirements.
  • Create technical documentation to support the Design, Development, Deployment and operate the data centric application.
  • Monitor, identify, and correct complex software defects to maintain fully functioning software.
  • Produce multiple concepts and prototypes to design digital products/services.
  • Produce necessary technical documentation to support the design, development, implementation and support of any data centric application.
  • Research and suggest technical developments to improve quality of the software and supporting infrastructure to better meet users’ needs.
  • Maintain road map to facilitate software development and ensure the development work is prioritized in line with business requirements.
  • Design distribution of basic database/platform resources and provide physical modeling and design services to tune database/platform applications for optimum performance.
  • Provide information and comments on suitability during approval process for database/platform specifications to ensure all agreed standards and protocols are followed and data integrity is preserved.
  • Responsible for ensuring the proposed design, optimally addresses access and query patterns; data consumption and adheres to internal architecture standards.
  • Work closely with stakeholders and build relationships.
  • Refine data requirements to meet various data and analytics initiatives and data consumption requirements.
  • Support data-driven analysis to identify opportunities for product/service improvement.

What we are looking for:

  • Undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, or in a related field.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in IT systems development or related experience.
  • Knowledge of IT systems development principles and practices.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in designing and building data pipelines using Azure Databricks Engineering concepts and best practices.
  • Experience working with cloud data platform technologies: Azure Data Lake Store, API, Azure Function Apps, Azure Databricks, Delta Lake, Azure Synapse and Azure EventHub, Unity catalog .
  • Programming experience in Spark using languages such as Scala, Java and/or Python.

  • Proven experience with design, build and implementation of batch and real-time data pipelines. Driven by automated repeatable delivery of data that aligns to enterprise data governance standards.
  • Experienced collaborator working with various stakeholders across the business, data scientists and IT.
  • Experience working with modern data processing technology stacks: Spark, Hive.
  • Experience working with streaming data architecture and technologies for real-time: Spark Streaming, Kafka, Event Hub.
  • Experience working with relational and non-relational database technologies: SQL Server, Synapse Oracle, Cassandra, MongoDB, CosmosDB, HBase.
  • Experience working with source code and configuration management environments such as Azure DevOps, Git, Maven, Nexus.
  • Understanding of agile development methods including core values, guiding principles, and key agile practices.
  • Understanding of the theory and application of Continuous Integration/Delivery.
  • Bilingual in both official languages (French and English).
