Job summary

Community Living Sarnia-Lambton is seeking an assistant support counsellor to provide personalized care in our behavioural residential homes, supporting individuals with developmental disabilities and severe behaviours to participate in daily life.

You will work with a multidisciplinary team, implement care plans, use evidence-based strategies, document progress, and assist with daily living tasks while fostering independence, dignity, and community integration.

Qualifications

  • Education in developmental disabilities or human services as listed.
  • Knowledge of behaviour management techniques and crisis intervention methods.
  • Clear criminal record check with vulnerable sector screening; valid driver’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Provide assisting support to individuals with severe behaviours in residential settings.
  • Follow and assist individualized care plans based on the specific needs and goals of each individual.
  • Utilize evidence-based practices and behaviour management strategies to address challenging behaviours effectively.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, including psychologists, therapists, and social workers, to develop comprehensive intervention plans.
  • Document individual progress, behaviours, and incidents according to established protocols.
  • Use positive reinforcement techniques and assist individuals in acquiring new skills to promote independence and personal growth.
  • Offer crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques to manage challenging situations safely.
  • Assisting individuals in daily living activities, including personal hygiene, meal preparation, medication administration, and household tasks.
  • Promote a supportive and inclusive environment that helps socialization and community integration.
  • Advocate for the rights and needs of individuals with developmental disabilities and severe behaviours.

Community Living Sarnia-Lambton (CLSL) is a charitable, not-for-profit, unionized organization dedicated to enriching the lives of people who have an intellectual disability. CLSL currently provides support and services to more than 300 participants and their families that promote individual choice and life goal achievement.

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate assistant support counsellor with specialized expertise in supporting individuals with severe behaviours. As an assistant support counsellor, you will play a crucial role in providing personalized care, assisting in behaviour management strategies, and promoting the overall well-being of individuals with developmental disabilities and challenging behaviours.

Position Summary:

CLSL is seeking assistant support counsellors for our behavioural residential homes, who will assist participants to achieve their personal goals and outcomes, foster independence, and enable them to actively participate in all aspects of community life. This position will:

  • Provide assisting support to individuals with severe behaviours in residential settings.
  • Following and assisting individualized care plans based on the specific needs and goals of each individual.
  • Utilize evidence-based practices and behaviour management strategies to address challenging behaviours effectively.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, including psychologists, therapists, and social workers, to develop comprehensive intervention plans.

Schedule:

This role requires availability for pre-scheduled shifts, as well as call-ins during the weekends, nights, days, afternoons, and evenings. While most shifts fall within these hours, there may be an occasional need for flexibility to meet individual needs.

Position Requirements:
  • Education in developmental disabilities or human services (e.g., DSW, SSW, CYW, ECE, FSW, PSW).
  • Knowledge and experience using behaviour management techniques, positive reinforcement strategies, and crisis intervention methods.
  • Preferred previous experience in various support setting(s) with a proven ability to support persons who have autism, developmental disability, dual diagnosis, or physical and sensory challenges or who are medically fragile or technically dependent.
  • A valid driver license is a requirement.
  • A current standard first aid and CPR certificate is an asset.
  • A clear criminal record check with vulnerable sector screening.
  • You will be required to obtain a Certified Driver's Abstract directly from ServiceOntario, or provide one that is no more than one (1) month old on or before your hire date
