Job Description

Position Purpose
This position provides support to the Store Manager/Corps Officer in organizing and supervising all operational areas of the retail store. It ensures the mission of The Salvation Army is supported by the Thrift Store, generating funds and positively influencing the communities it serves.

Responsibilities
  • Oversee safety of all customers, staff, and volunteers in the store.
  • Assist with planning store layouts and ensure the store is attractive.
  • Handle customer concerns or complaints in a timely and courteous manner.
  • Support the Store Manager/Corps Officer to ensure all cash operations comply with Salvation Army Policy and Procedures; manage nightly deposits.
  • Oversee inventory control by ensuring donations are retrieved, sorted, and priced appropriately.
  • Provide direction and support to staff in the absence of the Store Manager.
  • Participate in interviews and hiring; provide orientation and training.
  • Provide feedback for performance management of staff in compliance with divisional and territorial standards.
  • Assist in planning store sales, promotions, and auctions.
  • Plan staff schedules, staff meetings and training sessions.
  • Sort, price, and stock various goods.
Health and Safety
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and regulations and abide by The Salvation Army health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Support the Store Manager/Corps Officer in ensuring staff are aware of emergency procedures and prepared to implement them.
  • Ensure proper procedures are followed in case of workplace injury or illness; conduct incident investigations as applicable.
  • Perform other work-related duties as assigned.
Critical Relationship Management

Internal: Store Manager, Corps Officer(s), volunteers, staff
External: Community, external vendors

Managerial/Technical Responsibilities
  • Reports directly to the Store Manager.
  • Direct reports: None.
  • This position supervises staff members and volunteers in the absence of Store Manager/Corps Officer.
Financial and Material Management
  • Moderate material responsibilities.
  • Regular responsibility for minor financial matters and for wise use of own resources.
  • May be authorized to handle small amounts of cash. Little input to annual budget or revenue projections.
  • The above responsibilities must be discharged in accordance with The Salvation Army’s Mission Statement, in a professional manner, upholding our code of conduct.
Working Conditions
  • This is a permanent full-time position.
  • Working environment is in a store.
  • Flexibility in work schedule is required; schedule will vary and include weekdays and/or Saturdays.
  • Required to stand for long periods with frequent twisting, bending, crouching, and reaching.
  • Ability to lift/move up to 29 pounds regularly.
  • Travel is required for meetings, etc.
  • Work conducted in keeping with The Salvation Army’s Mission, Vision and Values, and code of conduct.
Education, Experience and Qualifications
  • Willingness to support the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and itsImplications for position responsibilities; comply with OH&S Act and regulations.
  • Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.
  • Formal post-secondary program or specialized courses in Retail Management or equivalent; other combinations may be considered.
Experience and Knowledge
  • Two (2) years of prior related retail store experience; secondhand merchandise experience preferred.
  • Basic accounting experience required.
  • Cash handling experience required.
  • Experience with cash registers and related processes (bank deposits, summary reports).
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications; experience with Salvation Army systems is an asset.
Skills and Capabilities
  • Ability to work in a team to provide direction, resolve conflicts, and optimize use of donations.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Results-driven with strong time management and delegation abilities.
  • Experience in performing administrative tasks; team player with compassionate, respectful, non-judgmental approach.
  • Familiarity with cash handling, pricing, sorting procedures, product display and promotion guidelines.

Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks satisfactorily to The Salvation Army.

Compensation

The target hiring range for this position is $20.75 to $25.94 with a maximum of $31.13. Placement in the salary range will be based on market conditions, internal equity, candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
