Accountabilities
Resident Care

Support the Recreation Therapy Manager in planning, implementation, and evaluation of the delivery of the Recreation Therapy Program to ensure the program meets the physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of residents. The Assistant Recreation Therapy Manager will provide direct recreation therapy services, including resident assessments, care planning, and one- to- one programming to residents at Grace Manor. The Assistant Recreation Therapy Manager would have a trauma-informed care focus with an understanding of harm reduction. Assist in conducting recreation therapy assessments using a therapeutic recreation model and tools grounded in best practice. Assist in organizing, directing, and evaluating frequent and ongoing opportunities for residents to engage in community outings. Provide therapeutic recreation services in functional intervention, leisure education and recreation participation. Collaborate with residents to develop goal-directed plans of care for recreation, leisure, and social engagement. Empower residents to be independent, learn and practice new skills, and make choices for themselves. Operate within the scope of practice of a Recreation Therapist to deliver safe, efficient, and effective delivery of all recreation services. Liaise with Alberta Health Services in matters relating to the residents sponsored by Alberta Health Services including assessment of clients’ leisure, social and recreation needs, and making recommendations to the appropriate team member. Assess resident responses to interventions; reports any significant changes to Recreation Therapy Manager and appropriate team members. Ensure a high standard of evidence-based and resident-centered programming. Foster relationships with various community and recreational groups to enhance resident programming.

Program Coordination and Administration

The Assistant Recreation Therapy Manager will provide administrative support to the Recreation Therapy Manager assisting with scheduling, documentation, reporting, and other operational tasks as required. Maintain accurate levels of documentation according to professional standards as required for risk management and quality improvement activities, and to meet funding requirements. Maintain a pool of resources with other community services for easy accessibility by the residents. Ensure adequate and appropriate recreation supplies and equipment are maintained. Assist other departments with daily routines to enhance quality of life and ensure the health and safety of residents (clean up spills, assist residents with personal hygiene). Evaluate client progress and document findings. May be required to drive residents to out-side recreational activities using company vehicles.

Other

Communicate in a sensitive and compassionate manner with residents and their families thus promoting dignity and respect. Represent the Recreation Therapy Team at internal and external meetings as assigned. Participate in the Occupational Health and Safety Program of the Salvation Army as required. Always represent The Salvation Army in a professional manner and uphold its Mission. Work as a member of the Case Management Team ensuring an efficient, safe, and resident-oriented facility, providing holistic integrated care, including participating in case conferences. All other work-related duties as assigned.

CRITICAL RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT
  • Councils and Boards: None
  • Internal: Various ad hoc Committees as assigned, Staff member, Department Managers on recreation activities for residents.
  • External: Community groups, Alberta Therapeutic Recreation Association, and other external recreation groups.
MANAGERIAL RESPONSIBILITY

This position reports directly to the Recreation Therapy Manager. Acts as a Team Lead. May supervise Recreation Assistants in the absence of the Recreation Therapy Manager.

FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT

Minor material responsibility: maintain confidential files and reports of residents. May be allowed to handle a credit card with $3,000 limits. Does not process any financial transactions with no budget responsibilities.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The incumbent’s work environment is typically in residential common areas, community recreation facilities, outdoor recreation areas, in the community and in the office or residential rooms. Interaction with individuals who may be aggressive or violent, potential exposure to hazardous substances and materials. The incumbent must be willing to travel between Edmonton Centre of Hope sites and around Edmonton areas for outdoor recreation activities. Some non-local travel may be required. The incumbent’s work environment is typically at work sites within residential settings, and may require working under the following disagreeable conditions and will need to follow or use universal precautions:

  • Dealing with angry and abusive people,
  • verbal abuse
  • Exposure to bodily fluids, bodily waste, and infectious diseases
  • Exposure to drugs, alcohol, and solvents
  • Physical attacks by others
  • Exposure to toxic chemicals
  • Sharp objects (i.e., needle sticks, knives, and weapons)
  • Other dangerous situations
  • Immunization for Hepatitis B and vaccination against Tuberculosis
Education and Experience Qualifications
  • Completion of a formal post-secondary/college program of two academic years in Recreation Therapy, Leisure Studies, Recreation Administration is required.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation Therapy, Leisure Studies, Recreation Administration, or a related field will be considered as an asset.
  • National Council of Therapeutic Recreation Certification will be considered as an asset.
  • Current license with the Alberta Therapeutic Recreation Association.

This is a Full-time position.

Weekly scheduled hours: 40 hours

Compensation

The target hiring range for this position is $25.39 to $31.73 with a maximum of $38.08. Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
