Job description

Lawrence University of Wisconsin, a selective undergraduate liberal arts college and conservatory of music located in Appleton, Wisconsin, invites applications for a full-time tenure track Assistant Professor of Biology with a primary focus in genetics to begin September 1, 2027. Candidates should hold a Ph.D. in biology or closely related field prior to the time of appointment. We seek an individual who is passionate about teaching and working with undergraduate students in a liberal arts setting, an active and engaged scholar, and an effective mentor for students from diverse backgrounds.

Primary responsibilities include teaching with active learning methods and mentoring student research projects; assessing student learning; advising and mentoring students; assisting in curricular planning; and departmental and institutional service. Teaching load is two non-lab courses (or one course with two lab sections) per trimester on a 10-week trimester calendar. Laboratory space, funds to support research, and support for professional development are available. The successful candidate will also participate in Lawrence’s flagship First-Year Studies program. The First-Year Studies curriculum is an interdisciplinary introduction to the liberal arts intended to support new students’ fundamental skills as readers, writers, and thinkers. The successful candidate will teach BIOL 260: Genetics, one introductory biology course, and upper-level courses in their area of expertise.

Candidates should have the ability and desire to engage and mentor undergraduates in collaborative research and otherwise connect scholarship with teaching. Laboratory space and start-up funds are available for establishing a research program. The Department of Biology has excellent facilities to support faculty research and teaching, including state-of-the-art facilities for use in cell culture work and several model genetic and ecological systems, microscopy, biological imaging, and molecular work. Candidates with a broad range of research expertise that complement the department are encouraged to apply including, but not limited to bioinformatics, human biology, molecular genetics, zoonotic diseases, synthetic biology, aging or regenerative biology.
