POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Department of Management at the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in Environmental Economics. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2027.

This position is part of the Canada Excellence Research Chair Network for Equity in Sustainability Transitions (CERC-NEST). The CERC NEST uses a transdisciplinary, comparative and action-centred approach with communities and city actors in Toronto and internationally to examine how to enhance participation in decision-making, address inequities in regulations and investments, and ensure fair distribution of benefits, livability and a good life for all. The successful candidate will contribute economic perspectives and methods to this agenda, with particular attention to the distributional, procedural, and recognition of the dimensions of climate and sustainability policies and interventions.

This search aligns with the University’s commitment to strategically and proactively promote diversity among our community members ( Statement on Equity, Diversity & Excellence ). Recognizing that Black, Indigenous, and other Racialized communities have experienced inequities that have developed historically and are ongoing, we strongly welcome and encourage candidates from those communities to apply.

In addition, the University of Toronto Scarborough is implementing its Strategic Plan: Inspiring Inclusive Excellence . Consistent with the values and objectives in that plan, we especially welcome candidates who self-identify as Indigenous or those who have lived experience in Black or other racialized (persons of colour) communities. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to be connected with colleagues from under-represented groups, including those hired through targeted efforts in recent years across departments spanning the Sciences, Social Sciences, and Humanities.

REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must have earned a PhD degree in Economics, by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter, with a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching in environmental economics. Candidates should have an academic concentration and research program that are directly related to environmental economics. We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and enhance our existing departmental strengths, dovetail with CERC NEST research vision and methodologies, and contribute to campus strengths and priorities. Relevant areas may include, but are not limited to, environmental and energy policy, climate economics, environmental regulation, sustainable transportation, urban environmental economics, and the distributional impacts of sustainability interventions.

Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence which can be demonstrated through a record of publications in top-ranked and field-relevant journals, forthcoming publications, or working papers that meet high international standards; the submitted research statement; presentations at significant conferences; awards and accolades; and strong endorsements from referees of high standing in the candidate’s field.

Evidence of excellence in teaching will be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, the teaching dossier (including the required materials outlined below, as well as evidence of superior performance in other teaching-related activities), and strong letters of reference. Other teaching-related activities can include performance as a teaching assistant or course instructor, experience leading successful workshops or seminars, student mentorship, or excellent conference presentations or posters.

Candidates must also show evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion and to the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment, as demonstrated through the application materials. Candidates are asked to submit a 1- to 2-page statement of contributions to equity and diversity, which might cover topics such as (but not limited to): research or teaching that incorporates a focus on underrepresented communities, the development of inclusive pedagogies, or the mentoring of students from underrepresented groups.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful candidate will be expected to pursue innovative and independent research, and to establish an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program. Grounded in the CERC-NEST goal of co-producing knowledge to foster equity in sustainability transitions, the successful candidate will be expected to integrate perspectives from economics into research and teaching on equity and justice in energy and sustainability transitions, including the evaluation of the distributional, procedural, and recognition dimensions of sustainability interventions. The successful candidate will also be expected to collaborate across disciplines and, where appropriate, engage with communities, city actors, and other partners involved in CERC-NEST research.

In addition, the successful candidate will be assigned a teaching and service load. Responsibilities also include advancing the area's research agenda, teaching undergraduate students at the University of Toronto Scarborough, and active involvement in PhD student education and training.
