Job summary

Counselwell Inc. in Toronto, ON is seeking an Assistant General Counsel, Product to provide practical legal counsel to Product, Technology, and Marketing teams across the product lifecycle.

You will assess legal, regulatory, and reputational risks, advise on advertising and IP matters, and help develop compliance frameworks for AI and consumer protection. This role requires a JD and active license in Ontario, plus 6+ years in product-focused law, with hybrid work several days a week.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor with active license in Ontario, Minnesota, or Texas.
  • 6+ years in law firm or corporate legal dept advising on product counseling or related matters.
  • Familiarity with advertising laws, AI regulation, IP, and consumer protection laws.
  • Strong ability to build, improve, and scale internal processes, documentation, and systems.
  • Ability to work effectively in a diverse, cross-functional team.

Responsibilities

  • Advise product and business partners from concept to launch for new products.
  • Assess legal, regulatory, and reputational risks and provide guidance.
  • Review marketing campaigns, messaging, assets across digital properties.

Assistant General Counsel, Product

Location: Toronto, ON (Hybrid). The role may also be based in Minneapolis, Dallas, or Toronto.

Role Overview

Provide practical legal counsel to Product, Technology, and Marketing teams, advising on legal, regulatory, and reputational risks across the product lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities
  • Advise product and business partners on legal issues from concept through launch for new products, features, and functionality.
  • Assess legal, regulatory, and reputational risks and provide business‑oriented guidance.
  • Review and advise on marketing campaigns, product messaging, sales communications, marketing assets, and updates across digital properties.
  • Develop and implement regulatory compliance best practices, especially in AI, consumer protection, advertising, intellectual property, and related laws.
  • Provide legal support for product partnerships, integrations, strategic alliances, and co‑development arrangements.
  • Create, update, and deliver training materials, playbooks, templates, and other resources for business partners.
Qualifications
  • Juris Doctor degree and admission to practice or eligibility to practice in Minnesota, Texas, or Ontario; active license in good standing.
  • 6+ years of experience in a law firm and/or corporate legal department advising on product counseling, consumer protection, technology transactions, or related matters.
  • Familiarity with global advertising laws and regulations, AI regulation, intellectual property law, and consumer protection laws.
  • Strong process orientation and ability to build, improve, and scale internal processes, documentation, and systems.
  • Sound judgment, intellectual curiosity, initiative, and creativity in solving complex legal and business problems.
  • Ability to work effectively and inclusively as part of a diverse, cross‑functional team.
  • Experience with technical disciplines, product development, or managing attorneys is a plus.
Job Status

Replacement position due to an existing vacancy to support evolving business needs.
