Under the general direction of the Managing Director of the Department of Management, the Assistant Director, External Relations, is responsible for contributing to and executing an on-going vision and developing an enhanced external relations profile for UTSC Management and Management Co-op.


The Assistant Director, External Relations manages the co-op external relations team and builds ties with alumni in order to advance the academic mission of the department. The incumbent is required to have a strong understanding of the internal workings, student activities, academic programs and policies of the Department and University to effectively represent Management’s interests to external stakeholders. The Assistant Director, External Relations will interact with corporate partners to assist in the maintenance and growth of existing partnerships and development of new partnerships in industry sectors of interest to our students. Interaction with corporate partners will also ensure the participation of employers in Management Co-op’s programming and that programming is developed and delivered based on a very solid knowledge of corporate needs and expectations.


The incumbent will initiate, develop, and deliver on-going alumni and employer outreach activities in order to advance academic priorities which will ensure that the Department of Management student and faculty experience is relevant and innovative. This position will align with UTSC and University of Toronto strategies in the development and implementation of: a targeted marketing campaign; public relations; student recruitment strategies; job development for co-op students and graduates; alumni programs to support the academic objectives with referrals to the Development and Alumni Relations Office as appropriate.

Qualifications Required:

EDUCATION:

Bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. A degree of formal training in business and/or communications is an asset. Masters is preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

At least five (5) years of related experience in external relations within a post-secondary environment, with a successful record of building relationships as they relate to the student experience and work-integrated learning (WIL). Must have a comprehensive and global understanding of the post-secondary education system. Must have demonstrated senior level experience in WIL programs and demonstrated success in strategic use of events and programs to achieve institutional or management objectives. Must have advanced knowledge and experience in the WIL domain and in developing relationships with professional associations/corporations and expertise with their needs in order to assess synergies in program delivery. Project Management experience an asset. Must have experience in presenting recommendations through compelling business cases and presentations to diverse audiences. Experience in a management capacity and directing the work of others.

SKILLS:

Proficient with and demonstrated experience working with Microsoft Office, internet and social media (LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc.). Demonstrated ability to conduct research on the educational markets within which the Department operate, and to be able to recommend emerging technologies for mobile and other communication devices (for example the interpretation of Google Analytics data).

OTHER:

Excellent presentation and written and oral communication skills. Proven ability to negotiate and to be diplomatic and discreet. Excellent organizational, analytical and project management skills. Ability to speak in public, to train and motivate staff and volunteers; experience in organizing complex programs and events. Well organized, focused and goal‐oriented; proven ability to inspire confidence, to motivate and to persuade; ability to be flexible in working independently as well as collaboratively; exhibits initiative to organize and follow through with complex tasks to meet deadlines; ability to solve problems in a strategic and tactical manner. Proven track record of success in developing and implementing strategies for complex projects, marketing, recruitment, alumni affairs and external events. Valid driver’s license and access to personal vehicle required (regular travel within southern Ontario). International travel may also be required. Requires advanced level of acuity to anticipate and synthesize impact of decisions made. Requires constant assessment of risk mitigating strategies to optimize results due to the complexities of stakeholder engagement. Cultural sensitivity and capacity to work with international students and internationally trained professionals. The incumbent will be required to discuss the applicability and design of existing and new programs internally and externally to assist with launching relevant and rigorous academic programs. Must show evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment.
