Description: U of T Mississauga is a leading research university in Ontario’s Peel Region. The campus supports 16,500 students, 3,400 faculty, librarians and staff. The position is part of the Budget, Planning & Finance team, reporting to the Director, Academic Finance.

Position Summary

The Assistant Director (AD) works independently under the Director of Academic Finance as a senior member of the Budget, Planning & Finance team. The AD provides financial leadership for the academic, library and research operations, oversees budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting and process improvement across a portfolio with a budget of approximately $18 million.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the annual budgeting process across the portfolio, coordinating data collection, model development and stakeholder engagement.
  • Prepare and deliver extensive financial reporting and analysis to the Dean, senior leadership and approved stakeholders.
  • Develop and implement financial policies, procedures and control frameworks to ensure compliance with university and federal regulations.
  • Provide financial advice on a wide variety of operational issues and recommend resource allocation decisions.
  • Manage a team of analysts and support staff, including recruiting, training, performance management and professional growth.
  • Drive significant change initiatives, including process improvement, system implementation and organizational restructuring.
  • Oversee quarterly forecasting exercises and operational audit activities, translating findings into actionable recommendations.
Qualifications Required
  • Education: University degree and a professional accounting designation (CA, CMA or CGA) or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience in finance and business management.
  • Experience: Minimum 7 years progressive experience in budgeting, accounting and financial analysis, including being a trusted advisor and business partner in resolving new, complex issues. Minimum 4 years experience in people management, including recruiting, training and performance management.
  • Experience in public accounting firms is considered an asset.
Skills and Competencies
  • Excellent leadership, management and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with the ability to think strategically.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to convey complex financial information to non‑financial audiences.
  • Advanced knowledge of spreadsheet applications and familiarity with SAP and other financial and human resources information systems.
  • High attention to detail, initiative and a self‑starter attitude.
