Qualifications

  • Achieved or working towards a Second-Class Power Engineer’s Certificate.
  • 4 to 6 years of progressively more advanced experience in a related technical environment.
  • Commitment to achieving a First-Class Power Engineer’s Certificate within 5 to 7 years.
  • Advanced analytical, problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite®.

Responsibilities

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety rules and procedures.
  • Ensure all steam plant installations comply with regulations.
  • Responsible for the maintenance of the Quality Control Manual for BPV Contractor License.
  • Provide technical expertise for the steam distribution system.
  • Manage project and contractor work related to pressure vessels and boilers.
  • Coordinate with Technical Safety BC for upgrades.
  • Oversee coordination of partners and suppliers during shutdowns.
  • Contribute to cost control and budget input.
  • Develop strategies for efficient operation of service facilities.
  • Counsel staff on safety and industrial relations.
  • Coordinate training requirements for Power Engineers.
  • Maintain knowledge of relevant codes and standards.
  • Perform all other duties as required.

Role Overview

Teck is looking for an experienced Assistant Chief Power Engineer to join our team at Trail Operations. Reporting to the Chief Power Engineer, the Assistant Chief Power Engineer is accountable for supporting the Chief Power Engineer with their role of monitoring the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of all boilers, pressure vessels and pressure piping for Trail operations. This includes assisting the Chief Power Engineer in maintaining compliance for all boiler, pressure vessel, refrigeration and pressure piping work throughout Trail Operations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Ensure all Trail steam plant installations are designed, operated, maintained and inspected to meet Teck and government regulations by providing specifications for design and selection of equipment, layout, preventative maintenance strategies, and operating procedures
  • Responsible for the implementation and maintenance of the Quality Control Manual for Teck’s BPV Contractor License
  • Provide technical expertise and current understanding of the steam distribution system to Trail Operations
  • Ensure project management and contractor management work related to all pressure vessels, pressure relief valves, boilers, etc. are completed as required by applicable standards, codes and regulations
  • Ensure new equipment is properly identified and engineering drawings are updated; assess existing equipment, determine its capability to meet acceptable standards and recommend suitable replacements
  • Liaison with Technical Safety BC and Trail Operations on upgrades or changes to Boilers, Pressure Vessels and Pressure Piping
  • Oversee the coordination of external partners and suppliers for applicable plant shutdowns and upgrade projects
  • Contribute to cost control by providing input to budgets by monitoring and reporting on expenditures and by identifying opportunities to continually reduce costs and explaining variances
  • Ensure the efficient operation of the various service facilities by developing and implementing strategies in conjunction with operating and maintenance personnel
  • Counsel staff on manpower, union, safety and industrial relations issues
  • Coordinate the Power Engineer training requirements and Power Engineer certification management for Trail Operations
  • Keep abreast of the latest developments, maintaining a comprehensive knowledge of the American Standard of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the National Board Inspection Code (NBIC), Boiler Pressure Vessels and Refrigeration Regulations and any other applicable codes and standards
  • Perform all other duties as required

Please note this role does require the successful candidate to live within 100 km of Trail, British Columbia. Relocation assistance will be offered; however there is no camp or company housing.

Pay Range: CAD $119,000 – $147,000 per year. The actual amount offered is determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.
