Job description

Assistant Bioinformatics Coordinator

BC Cancer

Vancouver, BC

The Assistant Bioinformatics Coordinator provides supervision and technical support to the Bioinformatics group of the Genome Sciences Centre (GSC). Responsibilities include overseeing staff work, clarifying job expectations, making hiring recommendations, monitoring performance, and ensuring standards and practices are communicated and followed. Ensures that the daily activities of the Bioinformatics group meet quality and service standards to support research, clinical data analysis, and software development objectives.

What you'll do
  1. Assist the Bioinformatics Coordinator and/or Group Leader in daily activities, providing input on work quality and suggestions for workflow improvements.
  2. Coordinate projects by chairing meetings, providing project status reports, and suggesting improvements in project management and task allocation.
  3. Develop and implement assays to monitor project progress and measure accomplishments, maintaining project focus and providing staff feedback.
  4. Supervise staff by assigning tasks, establishing schedules, clarifying expectations, reviewing priorities, and providing training and performance feedback.
  5. Participate in staff recruitment, including application screening, interviews, and hiring recommendations.
  6. Contribute to quality assurance programs by monitoring service quality and quantity, identifying improvements, and generating metrics for research and clinical programs.
  7. Assess research and clinical needs in collaboration with leadership.
  8. Participate in meetings related to bioinformatics, software development, quality management, and collaboration, contributing to decision-making.
  9. Assist in determining and recommending computer infrastructure needs and purchasing decisions for the bioinformatics platform.
What you bring

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry, Genetics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related field.
  • At least four years of relevant experience, including supervisory experience and skills in programming, data analysis, database development, or equivalent.

Additional skills and abilities:

  • Experience with Linux/UNIX operating systems.
  • Proficiency with Python, R, Postgres, MySQL, JavaScript, React.js, Node.js.
  • Experience with issue tracking and wiki software such as JIRA and Confluence.
  • Leadership skills, organizational ability, and effective communication.
  • Physical ability to perform duties and a commitment to Indigenous reconciliation and cultural safety.

  • Wage: $39.52-$49.32/hr

  • Hours: Monday-Friday, 8:30-16:30
