Job Description

Title: AS/400 Solution Designer

Location: Toronto, ON

Type: Full-time, Contract, or CTH

Scope

Reporting to the Director of the Development Team for Application Sales and Distribution, the incumbent acts as the technical lead for projects. From the design phase to the production environment, will participate in the organic design (sequence diagram) under development. The candidate will play an advisory role with programmers of AS/400 in their team and participate in the implementation of components according to pre-established norms and standards, ensuring adherence to quality and schedule.

Responsibilities

1. Designs and maintains complete application solutions based on project requirements.
2. Ensures solutions meet overall architecture, logic, and business techniques.
3. Analyzes and documents impacts of proposed solutions, promoting component reuse.
4. Writes or updates deliverables according to methodology (documentation, sequence diagrams, class diagrams).
5. Manages a team of 4-6 developers from a technical standpoint.
6. Ensures compliance with norms and standards, best practices, conducts code reviews, and contributes to process improvements.
7. Participates in development and application support.
8. Provides estimates and assumptions for development efforts, supporting planning.
9. Advises and assists the project manager in planning development work.
10. Participates, documents, and follows deployment of applications across environments.
11. Coordinates with other teams to identify and resolve project conflicts.

Technical Competencies / Qualifications

1. Minimum 5 years of experience in solution design.
2. At least 5 years of RPGLE application development experience.
3. Strong knowledge of IBM i (AS/400) operating system.
4. Proficiency in DB2 and SQL.
5. Knowledge of MKS Implementer.
6. Experience with Rational Developer for IBM i.
7. Knowledge of UML.

Good to Have

1. Experience with Java development in advanced environments such as Java/EJB, WebLogic Server, or WebSphere, and familiarity with Windows and Oracle, including multiple databases like Oracle, DB2, and SQL Server.
2. Knowledge of XML and related technologies such as schemas, namespaces, XPath, XSLT.
3. Minimum 10 years of application development experience.
4. Minimum 3 years of managing a team of developers.
5. Excellent communication skills in French and English, both written and verbal, with stakeholders and team members.
