Job summary

The City of Thunder Bay is seeking an Arena & Stadia Maintenance Worker to operate and maintain the assigned arena and stadia under supervision. You will perform semi-skilled and skilled maintenance tasks, monitor ice plant systems, logging readings, respond to service calls, assist with event set-up and take-down, and carry out custodial and snow removal duties as required.

With Grade 12 education and a valid Ontario driver’s licence, you will be reliable, able to work with minimal supervision,

Qualifications

• Grade 12 education or equivalent.
• Capable of reporting in writing and verbally on mechanical system conditions.
• Able to follow instructions clearly and communicate effectively.
• Reliable with minimal supervision.
• Basic word processing and spreadsheet skills.
• Knowledge of Occupational Health & Safety Act.
• Valid Ontario Class G driver’s licence.

Responsibilities

• Performs a variety of maintenance tasks for arena and stadia programs.
• Enforces policies regarding ice and facility usage.
• Prepares and maintains the ice plan and monitors ice surface and refrigeration readings.
• Ensures ice plant systems meet mandated requirements.
• Responds to service calls and initiates work orders as needed.
• Maintains log books for snow clearing, accidents, ice cleaning and tasks.
• Assists with setup and takedown of stages during events.
• Coordinates maintenance and renovations of arena facilities.
• Performs daily checks of HVAC, ice resurfacing and refrigeration equipment.
• Creates and processes daily work orders using maintenance software.
• Performs custodial tasks and keeps walkways clean.
• Maintains grounds and performs general facility maintenance.
• Follows established policies and procedures.
• Handles payments for ice rentals as directed.

Job description

POSITION SUMMARY

Under the general supervision of the Supervisor Arenas & Stadia Operations and the technical direction and guidance of the Leadhand Arenas & Stadia Operations, is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the assigned Arena and Stadia.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

• Performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks for the Arena’s and Stadia maintenance programs.


• Enforces policies with respect to ice and facility usage.


• Prepares and maintains the ice plan, ice surface and associated equipment; monitors and logs gauge readings for the refrigeration plant and ice surface as directed.


• Ensures that ice plant systems operate in accordance with mandated requirements.


• Provides initial response to calls for service; assesses maintenance needs and takes corrective action or initiates work orders for appropriate support and ensures timely completion.


• Maintains accurate log books for snow clearing, accident reporting, ice cleaning and maintenance tasks.


• Participates in the set‑up and take‑down of stages and equipment during special events


• Assists with the coordination of maintenance and renovations of arena facilities as directed.


• Performs daily checks of HVAC, ice resurfacing, and refrigeration equipment and reports any issues found.


• Performs daily work orders as assigned, utilizing the computerized maintenance software information system, as directed.


• Performs custodial tasks within facilities and grounds as assigned.


• Keeps walkways, driveways, and grounds clean of snow and debris as assigned.


• Performs facility maintenance as assigned.


• Follows established policies and procedures.


• Handles payments for ice rentals, as directed.


• Performs such related duties as may be assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/ Experience

• Grade 12 education, or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Skills/Abilities

• Must be capable of reporting, both in writing and verbally, on mechanical system conditions and/or problems


• Must be capable of issuing, reporting and accurately comprehending written/oral information and instructions


• Must be tactful and courteous with the public


• Must be reliable and have the ability to work with minimum supervision


• Must be at a basic skill level in word processing and spreadsheet software


• Must be competent within of the Occupational Health & Safety Act


• Must possess and maintain a valid Class “G” Ontario Drivers Licence, or equivalent


• Must meet the definition of a competent driver as defined by the Corporation

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

• Must obtain basic refrigeration certification within six months of hire


• Must demonstrate understanding of the operation of the refrigeration plant within the probationary period


• Will be required to work shift work Must undergo a successful Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check (CRJMC)


• Must remain a competent driver as defined by the Corporation


• May be required to provide a successful driver’s record (uncertified)
