Job description

ZGF is seeking a Mid-Level Architect or Senior Building Technologist to join our team in our Vancouver office to assist in the production of Construction Specifications and Drawings, Technical Input, and Quality Management. We are looking for self-directed people with 10 to 15 years of professional experience in Canada (US experience also preferred but not required), and who are thoughtful designers with excellent communication and technical skills. Applicants should have a keen interest in working in collaborative team settings.

As a Specifications Writer, you will:

  • Perform architectural assignments with general direction, no immediate supervision, and work independently as well as collaboratively with others toward design solutions.
  • Assist in developing and documenting design and technical solutions for projects in all phases.
  • Assist and/or prepare outline and 3-part specifications (Project Manual) for projects.
  • Research products, materials and building systems as required in the production of the Project Manual.
  • Make recommendations for products and systems when requested by project team.
  • Conduct quality reviews of construction documents while preparing specifications.
  • Stay current with product and system development, new methods and materials, code changes and industry trends.
  • Assist teams during construction phase to evaluate substitutions, submittals, and respond to RFIs.
  • Assist in mentoring colleagues during all phases of project development.

Qualifications:

  • Years of experience required: minimum of 10 years with Architectural practice.
  • Project experience in Multi-family Housing, Health Care, Interiors, and Commercial.
  • Participation in Construction Administration, experience from initial construction startup to project closeout is an asset. Experience with all phases of architectural practice preferred.
  • Education required: Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture or Diploma in Architectural Technology.
  • Certifications required or preferred: LEED Designation (GA minimum) and CSC Registered or Certified Specifications Writer (CCS) Designation are preferred. Passive House and/or Living Building certification is an asset.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, organizational and analytical skills.
  • Firm understanding of materials and methods and,
    • Building codes and regulations, including BC Step Code,
    • Industry standards such as RCABC, AWMAC, TTMAC and so on,
    • Masterformat, CAN/CSA/ULC Standards.
    • CCDC Construction Contracts; Stipulated Sum, Construction Management and Design-build.
    • Familiarity with United States specifications, holding US CDT or CCS certificate is an asset.
  • Understanding of zero emissions strategies including carbon and net-zero energy-ready is an asset as well as understanding of sustainability approaches and resiliency.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a highly collaborative team environment.
  • Ability to self-organize, schedule time for and process multiple projects at once.
  • Execution of construction documents, including specifications and drawings, with minimal supervision.
  • Proficient with Revit and Microsoft Office Suite.

What We Offer:

The current compensation range for this role is $105,000 to $135,000 annually, dependent on education and experience.
