Job summary

Stantec invites applications for Archaeology Field Supervisor at our Hamilton, Ontario location. You will organize, lead, and supervise field technicians to deliver archaeological services while applying modern recording techniques such as photogrammetry and high-precision surveys.

We seek applicants with a BA/BSc in archaeology, a valid MCM Research License, and at least one year of field experience in Ontario. Travel within Ontario and occasional overnight stays are required.

We have openings for Archaeology Field Supervisors to support work based out of our Hamilton/Stoney Creek, Ontario office for the 2026 archaeology field season (anticipated start date of March 2026). Your primary role will be to organize, lead, and supervise our teams of dedicated field technicians to deliver industry‑leading archaeological services for our clients.

As a member of the Stantec archaeology team, you will utilize and be supported in modern archaeological recording techniques such as photogrammetry and high‑precision digital archaeological surveys.

Our upcoming 2026 archaeological field season is anticipated to be busy and rewarding, with opportunities to work on large and complex projects across Ontario.

Your Key Responsibilities

• Be part of the archaeological field team that will complete fieldwork across Ontario.
• Supervise and perform archaeological assessments and mitigations utilizing a variety of approved field methodologies, including archaeological survey, testing, excavation, surface collection, and monitoring.
• Quality‑control fieldwork and data, and complete work in accordance with the Ministry of Citizenship and Multiculturalism (MCM) Standards and Guidelines for Consultant Archaeologists.
• Supervise a team of Archaeology Field Technicians.
• Lead and motivate your field team to achieve productivity goals.
• Take initiative and be responsive to changing project, equipment, material, and personnel needs.
• Work must comply with occupational health and safety policies and procedures and Stantec’s Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) program, policies, and safe work practices.
• Work with senior technical advisors, Project Managers, and Task Managers for delivery of high‑quality products that meet our clients’ unique project needs.
• Learn from and assist senior technical advisors in the development of advanced technical methods, techniques, documents, and tools.
• Work with Indigenous communities to develop and maintain relationships of mutual trust, respect, and collaboration.
• Travel within Ontario and overnight for extended durations is required at times.

Qualifications

• A thorough understanding and application of the MCM’s Standards and Guidelines for Consultant Archaeologists and associated Technical Bulletins.
• Working knowledge of Indigenous and Euro‑Canadian archaeological resources and artifacts, including the identification of archaeological stratigraphy, cultural features, and settlement patterns.
• Experience with ArcGIS, and other digital data applications, as well as transits and total stations.
• Prepare and maintain detailed field notes, drawings, and maps.
• Thorough understanding of MCM reporting requirements and their relevance to archaeological fieldwork.
• Leadership skills and the ability to motivate a team are essential.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Attention to detail is critical.
• Experienced at working well in a team atmosphere and independently as required.
• Working understanding of policies and procedures for HSSE, including client‑specific training (as required).
• Must have the willingness to learn new skills.
• Conscientious, organized, disciplined, and goal‑oriented.
• Builds and maintains productive professional and personal networking relationships within their technical team.
• Ability to perform rigorous physical activities, such as lifting up to 50 lbs and being capable of repetitive movement under adverse weather conditions.
• A good driving record and a valid driver’s license are required.

Education and Experience

• Minimum of a bachelor’s degree BA/B.Sc. in archaeology or an equivalent combination of education (i.e., cultural resources, heritage, anthropology) and experience.
• Minimum of a Research License in good standing with the MCM.
• Minimum of one year of proven field experience (Stage 1‑4 AA) in the role of Archaeology Field Supervisor, specific to Ontario consulting archaeology; greater than one year experience preferred.
• Experience field directing Stage 3 archaeological assessment and Stage 4 excavation is a valued asset.

Wages and Union Information

Under the Collective Agreement between Stantec and LiUNA, the hourly wage for the Archaeology Field Supervisor position for the 2026 field season ranges from $32.22 to $38.47 per hour, dependent upon the number of complete field seasons of experience in the Cultural Resource Management sector.

Travel and Schedule
