Job summary

Hatch Ltd. is seeking an Aquatic Resource Specialist to join the Environment, People, and Place practice in Canada.

You will bring deep fisheries and aquatics expertise to project delivery, build client relationships, and mentor junior staff while collaborating with engineering teams on mining, energy, and infrastructure projects. Based in Alberta, you will lead technical directions, manage regulatory expectations including Fisheries Act and Water Act applications, and travel to client sites

Qualifications

• Post-secondary education in aquatic environmental sciences or related discipline.
• 8–12 years of experience in fisheries and aquatics on major projects.
• Understanding of regulatory requirements in Alberta and the prairies; federal knowledge an asset.
• Hold or be eligible for Professional Designation under the Alberta Society of Professional Biologists.
• QAES certification preferred.
• Demonstrated business development and client engagement experience.
• Ability to lead, mentor, and inspire environmental teams; collaborate with engineers.
• Willingness to travel to client sites across central and Western Canada.

Responsibilities

• Lead and grow revenue and profit of the environmental consulting practice with a focus on fisheries and aquatics.
• Lead teams to deliver projects requiring Fisheries Act Authorizations and related applications.
• Identify and develop opportunities with mining, energy, and infrastructure clients.
• Provide leadership, technical direction, peer review, and advice within the practice.
• Coordinate key environmental deliverables on behalf of clients and projects.
• Provide technical and quality review for client deliverables.
• Mentor and lead project teams; collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.
• Recruit and develop Hatch’s environmental leaders.

The Role:Your knowledge and expertise in fisheries and aquatic science is critical for successful project delivery. As an Aquatic Resource Specialist within a growing team, you will be part of Hatch’s Environment, People, and Place practice, providing a combination of technical expertise in your field of experience, key client relationship management, and guidance and mentoring to junior and intermediate colleagues. We collaborate and partner with clients, communities, rightsholders, regulatory agencies, and Hatch’s engineering teams to solve our clients’ most challenging problems. The opportunity is unique: Hatch’s wealth of technical engineering expertise combined with exceptional environmental and consultation expertise allows for innovative solutions to the most complex project challenges.

Your challenges with us are to:

• Lead and grow the revenue and profit of our existing environmental consulting practice with a focus on fisheries and aquatics
• Lead teams to deliver successful projects requiring Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) Fisheries Act Authorizations (including offsetting planning, design, and implementation), Canadian Navigable Waters Act applications, Water Act applications, etc. Provincial experience in Saskatchewan and Manitoba is considered a strong asset.
• Identify and develop environment, people, and place related business opportunities with new and existing clients working in the mining, energy, and infrastructure sectors
• Provide leadership, technical direction, peer review, and advice within our existing environmental consulting practice, focusing on fisheries and aquatics
• Coordinate key environmental deliverables on behalf of clients and projects
• Provide technical and quality review for client deliverables
• Participate in resource planning and mentorship and leadership of project teams
• Work collaboratively with integrated, multidisciplinary teams, liaising with and supporting global peers
• Recruit and develop Hatch’s next generation of environmental leaders

Your profile:

• Post-secondary education in aquatic environmental sciences, marine or aquatic biology, and/or a related discipline
• 8-12 years of experience in managing and delivering fisheries and aquatics scopes on major mining, energy, and/or infrastructure projects
• In-depth understanding of fisheries and aquatics impact assessment, permitting, and regulatory requirements within Alberta, the prairies, and applicable Federal requirements. As a global firm, experience in other jurisdictions is an asset.
• Hold or be eligible for Professional Designation under the Alberta Society of Professional Biologists
• QAES (qualified aquatic environmental specialist) certification preferred
• Demonstrated business development and client engagement experience
• Ability to lead, mentor, and inspire environmental teams, collaborate with peers and integrate with engineering teams
• Experience working on major Engineering, Procurement, and Construction Management (EPCM) and/or Major Capital Projects is preferred
• Strong entrepreneurial spirit with a focus on technical quality
• Skilled at managing internal and external stakeholders
• Clear communication style with the ability to plan, lead, and deliver best in class, high-quality deliverables.
• Must have a driver's license and ability to freely travel to client sites across central and Western Canada
