Duties & Responsibilities

Administer and support Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server databases used by commercial off-the-shelf and custom applications on Windows-based infrastructure. Monitor database health, capacity, availability, and performance; investigate abnormal conditions and take preventive or corrective action before service is affected. Plan and execute database patching, upgrades, migrations, and technical refresh activities in coordination with application, infrastructure, testing, and operations teams. Install and configure database software, listeners, instances, and related components, including support for Oracle multitenant container and pluggable database environments as they are introduced. Perform and validate backup, restore, recovery, data migration, and environment refresh activities, with particular attention to operational continuity and data integrity. Diagnose complex database and application-data issues using SQL, logs, traces, and vendor guidance. Document findings, decisions, and repeatable resolution procedures. Support application queries, stored procedures, integrations, reporting workloads, and data movement, including performance tuning and troubleshooting across Oracle and SQL Server components. Prepare implementation plans, change records, rollback approaches, outage estimates, and post-change evidence for controlled releases and maintenance windows. Provide database support during planned releases and, when required, outside normal working hours. Participate in the program's on-call support arrangements. Coordinate with vendors and technical support organizations by providing diagnostic information and assessing recommendations for applicability within a controlled defence environment. Maintain accurate architecture, build, configuration, credential-location, lifecycle, and support documentation in approved repositories. Collaborate with team members to provide coverage, peer review, cross-training, and a consistent operating approach across database platforms and environments. Contribute database expertise to security, service-account, certificate, audit, and compliance-related changes while respecting information-handling and Controlled Goods requirements. Participate in technical planning related to platform lifecycle, licensing, obsolescence, and future application transitions. Work primarily from Halifax, Nova Scotia, with regular access to the Halifax office and secure customer environments as required. Work outside normal business hours occasionally to support production releases, maintenance windows, and urgent operational requirements. Travel occasionally to customer or partner locations as required. Handle sensitive technical information in accordance with applicable program security, export-control, and information-management requirements.

Minimum Qualifications

University degree or college diploma in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience. Practical experience administering relational databases in enterprise environments. Strong experience with either Oracle or Microsoft SQL Server, with the aptitude and willingness to develop capability on the other platform. Demonstrated SQL skills and experience troubleshooting database availability, performance, capacity, connectivity, or data-quality issues. Experience with database installation, patching, backup and recovery, migrations, monitoring, and performance tuning. Experience working within formal change, release, incident, and problem-management processes. Ability to understand applications from both technical and operational perspectives and collaborate effectively with application developers, infrastructure specialists, testers, and business users. Strong analytical judgment and attention to detail, with the ability to work methodically during outages and time-sensitive maintenance activities. Clear written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare implementation plans, support notes, and durable technical documentation. Ability to contribute effectively to peer review, knowledge transfer, and shared operational ownership. Eligibility to work in Canada. Ability to obtain and maintain the security and Controlled Goods clearances required for the assignment. Ability to work outside normal business hours occasionally for production releases, maintenance windows, and urgent operational support, including participation in on-call arrangements as required. Ability to travel occasionally to customer or partner locations. Ability to work from Halifax, Nova Scotia, with regular access to the Halifax office and secure customer environments as required.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with Microsoft SQL Server 2019 or later, including SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS), clustering or standalone migrations, SQL Server Agent, SSIS, SSRS, or SQL Server Express. Experience supporting databases for IFS Maintenix, IFS Cloud for Aviation Maintenance, or another complex commercial enterprise application. Experience supporting secure, disconnected, on-premises, or deployed environments where cloud services or direct vendor access may be constrained. Experience with Windows Server, virtualization, scripting or automation, certificates, service accounts, Kerberos, and Active Directory integration.
