Job Summary
We are launching a trading vertical focused on non-traditional, biomass-based, lower-carbon fuels for industrial decarbonization. As an Alternative Biomass Fuels Trader, you will originate, source, and trade solid and liquid biogenic fuels for industrial users across Canada and the United States. Near-term applications include cement and lime kilns, industrial boilers, and process-heat users seeking to replace coal, petcoke, and heavy fuel oils.
Target product slate:
- Torrefied/"black" wood pellets (biocarbon) and biochar fines
- Clean recycled-wood fuels (chips; pelletized/SRF-grade wood)
- Agricultural-residue fuels: sunflower hull pellets, rice husk, nut shells, olive pits/pomace, fruit stones
- Energy-crop fuels: miscanthus, switchgrass (chips/pellets/briquettes)
- Biogenic liquids for boilers/process heat: fast-pyrolysis bio-oil (FPBO), HTL biocrude (pilot/commercial as feasible), crude glycerin, tall oil where technically appropriate
You will build a North American supplier and customer portfolio, negotiate offtake/supply contracts, manage logistics (truck/rail/vessel), and collaborate closely with our Environmental Commodities and Renewable Fuels desks to maximize value and manage risk. This position requires 100% presence at Targray Head Office, Monday to Friday.
Who You Are
- Commercial and analytical. Comfortable with pricing logic, fuel specs, probability, and risk; persuasive and clear in written and spoken communication.
- Operator’s mindset. Hands-on with logistics and execution; you take ownership from contract through delivery and performance.
- Entrepreneurial and proactive. A self-starter who builds pipeline, opens new markets, and acts with urgency.
- Relationship-driven. Effective with decision-makers at the top and plant-level stakeholders; trusted by suppliers and customers.
- Adaptable, growth-oriented. You seek feedback, learn fast, and turn insights into better results.
Responsibilities
- Originate and trade alternative biomass fuels and biogenic liquids for industrial heat users (lime/cement, aggregates, district energy, institutional and industrial boilers, pulp and paper, CHP).
- Develop supply from torrefaction/biocarbon producers, waste-wood processors, sawmills, ag-residue aggregators, and bio-oil plants; design term offtakes and seasonal programs.
- Develop demand by identifying decarbonization opportunities and executing fuel trials through to full conversion at customer sites.
- Structure deals: price curves/indexation, HHV/ash/moisture specs, take-or-pay/offtake agreements, optionality (blend, volume bands), and hedging where applicable.
- Regulatory alignment: Work with Targray’s Regulatory & Compliance teams on provincial/state frameworks.
- Quality & compliance: Implement supplier qualification, chain-of-custody, and sustainability criteria; own fuel specs and COAs.
- Logistics & operations: Coordinate truck/rail/vessel movements, storage/handling, blending; manage claims, demurrage, and KPI performance.
- Market intelligence: Maintain analytics on supply/demand, pricing, seasonality, competing fuels, and policy changes; publish internal market notes and customer briefs.
- Cross-sell Targray solutions (environmental commodities) to enhance customer value.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Engineering, Science, or a related field; MBA or engineering background is an asset.
- 3+ years of biomass sourcing/sales/trading experience focused on non-traditional biomass fuels (biocarbon/torrefied pellets, recycled-wood fuels, ag-residue fuels, bio-oils) or adjacent industrial fuels trading with demonstrable deal flow.
- Proven origination with industrial end users (kilns/boilers/process heat) and an actionable supplier network in North America.
- Fluency in fuel specifications (HHV, ash chemistry, contaminants, moisture, particle size), burner/fuel-system requirements, and handling/storage.
- Working knowledge of regulatory frameworks affecting industrial biomass fuels and sustainability certifications/assurance.
- Strong commercial acumen: pricing models, contract negotiation, risk management, and logistics (truck/rail/vessel, terminals, storage).
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to build relationships from the C-suite to plant level.
Nice to have:
- Experience with coal-system retrofits (torrefied/biocarbon grindability; wood-powder injection).
- Exposure to fast-pyrolysis bio-oil (FPBO) commercialization and boiler/burner retrofits.
- Existing relationships with biocarbon producers, ag-residue aggregators, recycled-wood processors, and industrial end users in Ontario/Quebec and the U.S. Northeast/Midwest.
