Aquatic Invasive Species Initiative

Managing the threat of aquatic invasive species (AIS) in Alberta is an initiative to help stop the introduction and spread of AIS into Alberta's lakes, rivers, and across borders. The Watercraft Inspections Program is focused along major highways and requires all vehicles towing watercraft to stop at open inspection stations.

Role Responsibilities

Supervisor of a watercraft inspection station and Decontamination Technician. Oversee daily operations, supervise inspectors, ensure adherence to procedures, maintain a safe and effective work environment, and provide guidance during regular and on‑call hours.

  • Supervise station inspectors, set expectations, and ensure effective communication.
  • Ensure compliance with operational procedures and maintain station standards.
  • Develop work schedules and manage staffing requirements.
  • Resolve operational issues promptly and efficiently.
  • Foster a culture of health, safety, and compliance.
  • Participate in an on‑call rotation to provide guidance outside regular hours.
  • Deliver decontamination services efficiently and effectively for watercraft affected by invasive species.
  • Enforce quarantine and decontamination requirements under the Fisheries (Alberta) Act.
  • Assess and manage high‑risk watercraft situations across the province.
  • Travel extensively to respond to watercraft requiring follow‑up.
  • Ensure compliance with AIS program standards and protocols.
  • Inspect interior and exterior of various watercraft for presence of AIS.
  • Interview boaters to determine risk of introducing AIS.
  • Educate the public on the threat of AIS and provide outreach materials.
  • Tow and back up trailers and use a high‑pressure hot water decontamination unit for cleaning boats.

Qualifications
  • Minimum: Completed two‑year diploma in Natural Sciences or related Natural Resources field.
  • Additional (required prior to start): Alberta Class 5 driver’s license, Standard First Aid with CPR Level C, Valid Criminal Record Check.
  • Preferred: Experience in maintenance of small engines, pumps, and equipment; knowledge of watercraft systems; experience with or training in aquatic invasive species; certification Level II or III Watercraft Inspections and Decontamination; conflict management experience; knowledge of Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Program; previous supervisory experience.
