TITLE: AI Scientist (Education & Innovation)

POSITION OVERVIEW: AIC is seeking an AI Scientist (Education & Innovation) to lead applied AI initiatives across education technology and startup innovation. This role bridges academia and industry, combining research, product development, mentorship, and strategic advisory work.

You will help develop AI-powered products such as intelligent tutoring systems and an internal virtual assistant platform, contribute to academic collaborations, support teaching activities, and advise startups on AI strategy.

WHO WE ARE:

Alexander Innovation Centre (AIC) is a dynamic startup based in Vancouver, BC, formed in partnership with Alexander College. AIC focuses on advancing technological innovation across areas such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, data analytics, and advanced engineering. At AIC, we move quickly from prototype to production, with a strong focus on reliability, clarity, and meaningful impact.

EDUCATION & REQUIREMENTS:
  • Master’s degree (PhD preferred) in AI, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field
  • 5+ years of experience in AI research or applied machine learning (academic or industry)
  • Demonstrated experience building and deploying AI/ML models end-to-end
  • Proficiency in Python and modern ML frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow) with experience integrating AI into production software.
  • Experience with APIs/model serving (e.g., FastAPI/Flask), cloud platforms (AWS/Azure/GCP), and containerization (Docker/Kubernetes)
  • Strong ability to design, build, and deploy AI/ML systems end-to-end, with broad knowledge across areas such as deep learning, NLP, and computer vision.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills; able to explain complex concepts to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Research experience, including publications or applied innovation, and familiarity with grant writing or funded projects.
  • Proven leadership and collaboration skills, including managing projects and mentoring junior team members.
  • Strong innovation mindset, with enthusiasm for applying AI to education technology, virtual assistants, and real-world products.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Lead the design, development, and deployment of AI solutions, including intelligent tutoring systems and virtual assistant platforms.
  • Translate cutting-edge AI research into practical, scalable applications for education and startup environments.
  • Support academic research collaborations, publications, and teaching activities such as workshops or guest lectures.
  • Contribute to grant writing and the delivery of funded research and innovation projects.
  • Advise and mentor startups on AI strategy, architecture, and product integration from prototype to commercialization.
  • Mentor junior engineers and researchers, providing technical leadership and ensuring project quality and timely delivery.
  • Act as an AI thought leader, staying current with emerging technologies and representing AIC within the AI and EdTech community.
