Job summary

Desjardins Group is seeking a Temporary Legal Affairs Advisor for a 12-month position in Lévis, Canada. You will protect the organization’s legal interests, ensure regulatory compliance, and advise stakeholders on laws, policies, and contracts.

You will handle responsibilities across contested matters, corporate secretary duties, and governance matters while coordinating with various units and external partners. The role requires strong analytical thinking and interpersonal skills.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field is required.
  • Minimum four years of relevant experience.
  • Knowledge of French is required.
  • Business insight and interpersonal savvy are desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Advise and support organization units on initiatives and activities in your line of work.
  • Analyze data, conduct studies, write reports and provide recommendations.
  • Interpret laws, issue opinions, and prepare rules, standards, and agreements.
  • Diagnose issues and prepare recommendations, solutions and action plans.
  • Represent the organization in court, draft pleadings and negotiate terms.
  • Serve as a resource for units, clients and partners.

Job description

Temporary position for 12 months. As a legal affairs advisor, you help protect the organization’s legal interests by ensuring it complies with all laws. You also play a key role in making sure that its rights are protected and obligations are met. You represent the organization in situations involving its legal interests. You may be responsible for one or more sub-speciaities, such as contested matters and the Office of the Corporate Secretary (ethics and professional conduct, official registries, meeting minutes, the general meeting, etc.). You advise and assist clients and partners as part of intervention and development initiatives. You recommend solutions to improve or optimize standards, policies and programs. Your projects and initiatives require extensive knowledge of your line of work. You prepare recommendations, solutions and action plans based on the organization’s objectives and priorities. You help solve complex problems using your analytical skills and extensive knowledge of the line of business. Coordination is critical, so you frequently interact with stakeholders working in other fields. Interpersonal savvy is therefore essential.

Key responsibilities

You will be required to:

  • Advise and support the organization’s units and decision-making bodies on the handling and execution of initiatives and activities related to your line of work
  • Analyze data, conduct studies, make recommendations and write reports
  • Interpret laws and regulations, issue legal opinions, and prepare and validate rules, standards, policies, procedures, forms and agreements
  • Diagnose issues, challenges and needs to determine target outcomes. Prepare recommendations, solutions and action plans
  • Represent the organization in court. Draft pleadings, prepare witnesses, deliver oral arguments and negotiate the best possible terms
  • Serve as resource person for your unit, clients and partners.
