Position: Advanced Power Systems Engineer (E25-157) — Department: Engineering — Work Location: Airdrie — Status: 01 Full Time - Salaried — Number of Hires: 1

Description: Under the direction of the Principal Engineer of Advanced Power Systems, the Advanced Power Systems Engineer will conduct research efforts, conduct comprehensive technical system studies, assist in driving innovation, and develop standards within the Advanced Power Systems team. This role addresses a wide range of technical challenges within the distribution system, providing solutions to enhance performance and reliability across all areas, not limited to Distributed Energy Resources (DERs). The Engineer supports initiatives that integrate modern energy solutions while ensuring a safe and reliable distribution network.

Responsibilities
  • Perform load analysis, DER integration studies, system assessments, and grounding studies.
  • Ensure all assessments comply with industry standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Offer technical support and advice to technologists.
  • Facilitate professional development and knowledge sharing within the team.
  • Act as a technical authority on advanced power system applications.
  • Provide expertise on control systems for DER applications and complex integrations, such as ADMS, DERMS, Microgrids, VVO, DSM, etc.
  • Evaluate and authorize non-standard designs to ensure safety, reliability, and regulatory compliance.
  • Work with internal departments and external stakeholders to coordinate technical support.
  • Facilitate seamless delivery of electrical services that meet customer needs.
  • Support distribution grid enhancements, project prioritization, and resource planning.
  • Drive process improvements and guide teams through organizational changes.
  • Review and improve existing engineering practices to boost performance and reliability.
  • Implement innovative solutions to meet future demands from high penetration of DERs.
  • Participate in projects that promote the integration of modern energy solutions.
  • Approve designs for standard and non-standard applications as required by regulations, the Engineering Act, APEGA, and other external agencies.
  • Stay updated on regulatory changes and ensure all engineering activities comply with current laws and standards.
  • Support the Protection & Control (P&C) team by developing, designing, and testing setting templates for protective devices.
  • Assist with testing and commissioning of protective relays on-site or through office support.
  • Design and maintain electrical P&C standards using principles of electrical, mechanical, and civil engineering.
  • Use various engineering software programs and productivity tools to facilitate project delivery.
  • Interpret and manage technical and statistical data to inform decision-making and improve operational efficiency.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Advanced working knowledge of electrical protection design.
  • Demonstrated ability in using MS Office applications.
  • Technical expertise in protection and control; knowledge of codes, regulations, distribution standards, and FortisAlberta’s policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge in Power Systems; Applicable CSA/IEEE/IEC/UL standards, including DER interconnection requirements and related standards.
  • Working knowledge of SAP, CYME, EMTP, MS Office, GNet Viewer, OID, CRM, and related programs.
Education & Experience
  • University degree in a related Engineering field plus five (5) years of related experience; an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Must be registered as a Professional Engineer or be eligible to register as a Professional Engineer with APEGA.
  • Engineer-in-Training with APEGA (or eligible to register) with 3 years of electric distribution system engineering experience or equivalent may be considered.
  • Post-graduate Degree in Electrical Engineering is preferred.
  • Experience in a regulated environment, preferably within the electrical utility industry, is an asset.
  • Previous experience using technical and graphical software is an asset.
  • Previous experience with CYME and EMTP-RV is an asset.
