Job summary

Alberta Health Services is seeking an Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP) for Emergency Health Services in the Edmonton area. The ACP will assess scenes, transport patients between facilities, and provide advanced life support during transport.

Candidates must hold ACOP registration, BCLS CPR, a valid Class 4 Alberta license with a clean driver abstract, and complete the F.A.R.E. test if not currently in a clinical role. Role requires travel to remote locations and physical endurance.

Qualifications

  • ACOP registration as Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP).
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) CPR certification.
  • Valid Class 4 Alberta Operator's Licence with recent driver abstract (6 months).
  • Proof of successful F.A.R.E. test or eligibility for Lifemark evaluation.

Responsibilities

  • Assess emergency scenes and patients, may transport between facilities.
  • Operate ambulances and other transport units per standards.
  • Provide patient care with ALS, administer medications, airway adjuncts, and electrical therapy.
  • Support readiness of vehicles and equipment for emergency and non-emergency transport.

Your Opportunity:


As an Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP) in Healthy Streets, you will be a patient advocate who will effectively communicate and interact with community partners and allied healthcare professionals to ensure safe and proficient patient care and transportation. To fulfill your responsibilities, you will safely operate emergency vehicles, respond to medical and traumatic emergencies and inter-facility transport requests while adhering to professional standards, medical control protocols, standard operating procedures, polices and directives. You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team. This posting will be used to fill multiple vacancies.


Description:


As an Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP), you will assess emergency scenes and patients and may transport ill or injured individuals from emergency scenes and between facilities. This includes operating ambulances or other modes of transportation. You will provide patient care by administering medications, using advanced life support (ALS) airway adjuncts, and delivering electrical therapy. You may also lead the ALS team in providing clinical care during patient transport or at emergency scenes. You will support the readiness of vehicles by ensuring ambulances and other transport units, including non-emergent transport (NET) vehicles, are properly stocked, maintained, and equipped in accordance with established standards. The working environment for an ACP is demanding and includes exposure to heat, cold, rain, snow, wind, moving traffic, and industrial and agricultural equipment. You will be required to travel in all weather conditions and to remote locations (e.g., backcountry), with exposure to hazardous and graphic scenes and direct exposure to bodily fluids. This role is also physically demanding. You must be able to endure frequent lifting and carrying of up to 105 lbs while transporting and transferring patients, supplies, and equipment. You must be able to endure frequent simultaneous kneeling and trunk flexion for extended periods. Additionally, you must stand and sit for extended periods, as well as bend, twist, side-carry up to 20 lbs in each hand, and assume awkward positions.

Required Qualifications:


Non-restricted registration in good standing with the Alberta College of Paramedics (ACOP) as an Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) CPR certification. Must hold a valid Class 4 Alberta Operator's Licence, or equivalent, and provide a five (5)-year driver abstract, current within six (6) months and with no more than six (6) demerits, prior to commencing work. Proof of successful completion of the Functional Abilities Recruitment Evaluation (F.A.R.E.) test, verified by a certificate provided by the Lifemark organization, is required for applicants who do not already hold a clinical position within EHS (VESST, Clinical Educator, EMR, PCP, ACP, or Community Paramedic). The F.A.R.E. test must be completed no more than six (6) months prior to the date of the job offer.
