Job description

The Halifax Regional Centre for Education is accepting applications for the Substitute Administrative Assistant List for the 2025-26 school year.

Substitute employees are eligible to accept day-to-day and short term assignments to provide support to schools when permanent employees are away. HRCE has 136 school locations so, depending on where you live, there is potential for steady and frequent substitute work.

Candidates must create an online resume in order to apply. Please ensure your resume is completed in full, including the questionnaire section of the online resume, and outlines any relevant qualifications and experience. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Applicants must meet the following criteria :

  • Completion of a diploma / certificate program from a recognized institution in Office Administration / Management, Secretarial Science, or an acceptable equivalent obtained through relevant job training and experience.
  • Minimum two years recent experience in a fast-paced office environment utilizing an advanced computer system with proficiency in word processing, spreadsheets and databases;
  • Willingness to train in job-related software programs including an advanced Student Information System.

Rate of pay is $23.11 per hour and there is potential for regular work.

Following completion of a successful interview and positive reference checks, candidates will be contacted and required to provide the following before being added to the substitute list :

  • CurrentCriminal Records Check with Vulnerable Sector Check- available from your local Police or RCMP detachment or online atmybackcheck(please share your results with the Halifax Regional School Board). Must be issued within the past six months.
  • Child Abuse Registry Search Results - CAR - Search Resultscompleted within the last six months from the NS Department of Community Services (complete application at -CAR-4001_Request_for_Search_Form_A.pdf).
