Job summary

The Salvation Army in Ottawa is seeking an addiction counsellor to support clients through recovery with individual planning, group work, and crisis counselling. Candidates should have a degree in Social Services with addictions concentration, be pursuing CCAC CACCF, and demonstrate strong group facilitation and counseling skills.

Qualifications

• Experience with marginalized populations as an addiction counsellor.
• Knowledge of recovery modalities.

• Ability to recognize professional and personal boundaries.

Responsibilities

• Assist clients in recovery by providing information, therapeutic support, and insight through individual treatment planning and progress monitoring.
• Lead group sessions across Cognitive Behavioral, Anger Management, Emotional Health, Relapse Prevention, and Trauma-based counselling.
• Conduct assessments to determine suitability and inform counselling approach; maintain case notes and progress.
• Administer toxicology tests and refer to other resources as needed.
• Provide liaison with outside agencies and update client data for statistics.

Job Description

Position Purpose summary: Assist the client in his recovery process by providing him with information, therapeutic support, and insight through individual treatment planning, addiction specific programing and monitoring the clients progress towards mutually determined goals.

Group Work Facilitates group sessions as scheduled in the following program components: Cognitive Behavioral Classes Anger Management Classes Emotional Health and relationship Classes Relapse Prevention Classes Trauma based counselling.

Individual Counselling Completes assessments of potential clients, determining suitability to the Anchorage program or, when necessary, referral to other more appropriate programs Incorporate information obtained through the assessment process and comprehensive treatment/recovery plan to inform the counselling approach. Establish a helping relationship with the client, characterized by professional warmth, respect, genuineness, concreteness and empathy. Offers counselling to clients / candidates in crisis and makes referrals to other resources as required. Assumes an assigned caseload, as primary addictions care giver, using a case management system. Records in log and case notes in an accurate and clear manner, shares at case management sessions any observations and information regarding each client’s progress Support clients in the further development of treatment /recovery plans. Administers toxicology tests to clients.

Community Relations Provides liaison with outside service agencies such as Correctional Dept., Detox, Lawyers, etc.

Program Support Update’s data base with client information for statistical purposes Ensures documentation is complete, accurate, and up to date.

Education, Qualifications and Certifications

• Successful completion of degree/diploma in relevant field from an accredited post-secondary institution in Social Services with Addictions Concentration


• Either currently hold or is actively pursuing and within 1 year of obtaining CCAC certification under the CACCF Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements


• Experience working with a marginalized population as an addiction counsellor


• Proven working knowledge of all modalities of recovery


• Proven skill in the use of motivational interviewing and other cognitive behavioral therapies


• Experience in running therapeutic process groups


• Experience in group facilitating


• Ability to recognize and work within professional and personal limitations and boundaries

Skills and Capabilities

• Proven ability to work successfully in a team environment


• Good organizational skills and ability to work independently


• Experience administering Narcan and/or Narcan training a strong asset


• Bilingualism is an asset


• Superior group facilitation and counselling skills


• Clear Police Reference Check for Vulnerable Sector Screening is required

Compensation

The target hiring range for this position is $28.63 to $28.63 with a maximum of $28.63. Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
