GeoSpectrum is growing and has a new career opportunity for an Acoustic Scientist to join our team!

As the Acoustic Scientist with marine acoustic expertise, you will be responsible for the analysis and interpretation of underwater acoustic data, sonar system design and evaluation and developing state of the art sonar signal processing algorithms. Your work will directly support initiatives in ocean exploration, marine biology, naval defense, offshore energy, and environmental monitoring.

Responsibilities
  • Data Analysis: Use software tools and applications to process and interpret acoustic data to evaluate sonar system performance, detect marine life, or assess anthropogenic noise.
  • System Development: Contribute to the design of underwater acoustic systems, including passive and active sonar.
  • Algorithm Development: Research, prototype, and test novel signal processing algorithms and analysis methodology including Machine Learning solutions.
  • Modeling & Simulation: Develop and apply custom models to simulate vessel acoustic signatures in a dynamic environment, and model underwater sound transmission, scattering, and reverberation using tools such as Bellhop.
  • Field Operations: Plan and execute sea trials using sonar systems and other oceanographic instruments.
  • Collaboration: Work with engineers and software developers to support large scale sonar system development.
  • Reporting & Communication: Prepare technical documentation and presentations for stakeholders and customers. Track progress using Jira ticket tracking software
  • Innovation: Stay current with emerging technologies and trends in acoustics and contribute to the development of new methodologies and tools
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree (or Masters) in Physics, Math, Acoustics, Engineering, Marine Science.
  • Minimum of two years work experience in scientific data analysis and/or programming.
  • Ability to showcase post-secondary career portfolio (applied learning projects).
  • Knowledge and experience in acoustics, signal processing and/or oceanography.
  • Intermediate proficiency using programming languages IDL, Python, Matlab, Octave; C and C++, an asset.
  • Ability to analyze large datasets, interpret acoustic signatures, and draw conclusions relevant to sonar system performance.

Our ideal candidate may also bring a combination of the following career expertise:

  • Experience conducting fieldwork in marine environments, including deployment and retrieval of acoustic instruments from vessels or autonomous platforms.
  • Knowledge of oceanographic instrumentation and data integration (e.g., CTDs, ADCPs, GPS).
  • Experience with Machine Learning libraries such as PyTorch and TensorFlow.
  • Knowledge of regulatory frameworks such as the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) or Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs).
  • Prior involvement in defense, offshore energy, or marine conservation projects.
  • Familiarity with marine mammal acoustics, bioacoustics, or passive acoustic monitoring (PAM).
