Your Opportunity

One Permanent Full Time Position.

We are currently seeking an innovative and results-oriented individual to join our Trading & Origination Finance team! The Trading & Origination Finance group manages our financial results for the Trading & Origination activities of the company. We are responsible for all aspects of Trading & Origination Finance from settlements to complex accounting transactions, and monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting of trading results. We also assist in budget & forecast cycles across the organization and consolidate forward-looking financial information for the consideration of our executive and board.

Reporting to the Lead, Trading Finance, as the Accounting Specialist – Derivatives, you are accountable for the accounting and reporting requirements pertaining to commodity trading activities, including mark to market entries for our commodity and corporate derivatives. You will monitor and interpret changes in market data, such as commodity prices and interest rates, to provide insight on the drivers behind gains or losses on derivative portfolios.

You will contribute to our team by:

  • Calculating and recording accurate accounting accruals and month end entries for commodity trading activities, including the environment portfolio, and derivatives products
  • Performing reconciliations between the energy trading and risk management system to the accounting general ledger and external statements
  • Preparing support for quarterly and annual disclosures in our external financial statements that pertain to Financial Instruments and Derivatives.
  • Reviewing the forecasted hedge positions, designating new trades and updating hedge documentation as required
  • Maintaining updated documentation around the accounting, reporting, and settlement processes, ensuring adherence to CSOX and other controls
  • Supporting any new business initiatives by assessing the new initiatives under relevant accounting standards and incorporating changes into systems and reporting processes.
  • Building & maintaining strong collaborative relationships with various internal stakeholders to understand, interpret, and develop business analysis.
  • Adhering to internal control requirements and ensure internal controls are operating effectively.
  • Participating in ad hoc analysis projects as required.

What you will bring to the role:

Education:

  • Post-secondary degree in finance, accounting, or a related field.
  • Professional accounting designation.

Experience:

  • 5+ years of progressive accounting and financial analysis experience.
  • Working knowledge of the power generation business
  • Experience accounting for commodities trading activities and derivatives accounting.

Technical Skills:

  • Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities.
  • Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal), including the ability to work effectively with non-financial individuals.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • Ability to foster positive internal stakeholder relationships.
  • Experience with any of the following would be considered a strong asset:
    • Oracle or another enterprise-grade ERP, including Oracle Hyperion
    • Commodity trading systems
    • Microsoft Power BI

Working Conditions:

  • Hybrid office/work-from-home position.
  • Overtime hours required during peak periods (Quarter End/Year End), including weekends based on timing of deadlines.
