The Opportunity

Grizzly Excavating is a trusted civil construction contractor based in Penticton, BC. We work with local municipalities, governmental agencies, development partners and residents on civil construction and excavation projects. We focus on road building, water, storm, sewer mainline installations, and sub-division construction. Since its establishment in 2004, Grizzly Excavating Ltd has become a major player in the Okanagan Valley civil construction industry.

Accountant / Controller

We are a medium-sized civil construction company, and we pride ourselves on high-quality work, strong client relationships, and a collaborative workplace. With an expanding portfolio of projects, we are seeking a skilled Accountant / Controller to join our team and help drive continued financial success.

Working closely with other office staff, the successful applicant will incorporate sound accounting practices to administer the full range of day-to-day operation of a business while interacting with vendors and customers by phone, email and in person. The successful applicant must demonstrate a working knowledge of business accounting as well as possess excellent computer, phone, and in-person communication skills.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee full-cycle accounting including accounts payable/receivable, payroll, job costing, and the general ledger
  • Ensure accurate and timely month-end and year-end close processes
  • Prepare financial statements, reports, budgets, cash flow analysis, and cost forecasting
  • Manage WIP reporting, progress billings, subcontractor compliance, and holdbacks
  • Track equipment and asset costing, capital expenditures, depreciation, and inventory accuracy
  • Support project managers with cost reviews, margin tracking, and financial planning
  • Maintain and optimize accounting processes within Sage 100 Contractor
  • Lead preparation for audits and liaise with external accountants, banks, and advisors
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory filings and internal control policies
  • Share administrative duties with office staff such as file management, contract support, insurance tracking, and corporate documentation
  • Contribute to strategic planning and continuous improvement as part of the leadership team
Qualifications
  • CPA designation completed or working toward completion preferred
  • 5+ years of accounting experience, ideally in civil construction or other project-based industries
  • Strong working knowledge of Sage 100 Contractor software
  • Understanding of construction-specific finance principles including job costing, WIP, and unit-rate cost breakdowns
  • Proficient in Excel and digital workflow tools
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate with field and office teams
  • High accuracy, strong organization, and ability to manage multiple priorities

$30/ hour to $35 /hour (depending on experience) – Permanent, Full-time

8 Hour Shift – Monday to Friday
