Overview
The Accountant role is an exciting opportunity to be a key member of the Accounting team within a fast-growing company. Reporting to the Corporate Controller and working closely with the Senior Manager of Accounting, this position will oversee the Company’s accounts payable function while also supporting month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close activities. This is a pivotal role on the corporate accounting team, requiring adaptability, attention to detail, and a proactive approach in a dynamic environment.
Responsibilities
- Manage the accounts payable function.
- Process invoices.
- Set up purchase orders and change orders.
- Manage payments including running and cross-checking reports.
- Set up wire payments.
- Run GP (financial system) batches and update Concur for external payments.
- Manage vendor data in GP and Concur.
- Manage the AP mailbox and handle all vendor inquiries.
- Manage AP close for month-end.
- Prepare weekly bank balance and cash forecast reports.
- Download monthly bank statements and post bank entries.
- Prepare monthly credit card expense reports.
- Prepare month-end journal entries and update month-end schedules.
- Assist with other month-end reporting as required.
- File various tax returns, including but not limited to GST, VAT, excise tax, personal property tax, and 1099s.
- Update monthly foreign exchange rates in GP.
- Assist with preparing working papers for external auditors.
- Assist with implementing effective internal controls, including a review of internal controls to meet Sarbanes Oxley requirements.
- Prepare ad hoc accounting reports as required.
- Assist with developing new policies, processes and procedures as well as improving existing ones.
- Perform other general accounting duties as assigned.
Qualifications And Education
- Diploma or degree in Accounting and have completed a recognized professional accounting program is required (CPA or equivalent). Candidates in the process of completing their qualifications may be considered if they have strong relevant work experience.
- Minimum of 2 years of accounting experience, in a biotechnology environment is beneficial.
- Accounting experience in a public company is advantageous.
- Knowledge of Sarbanes Oxley and SEC filing and compliance is an asset.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
- Practical knowledge of accounting operations and strong ethics.
- Full understanding of the Accounts Payable processing cycle required.
- Monitor and maintain the efficient flow of documents and information.
- Experience using and maintaining Great Plains.
- Experience with Concur Expense and Invoice is an asset.
- Proficient in MS Office with advanced skills in Excel.
- Experience working with foreign currency exchange.
- Understanding of IFRS/US GAAP and statutory regulations.
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
- Able to work well within a consultative, team-oriented environment, as well as the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Willingness to take on new tasks as team priorities evolve as we move from clinical-trial stage company to commercialization.
