The Position

The Accountant will be responsible for managing the day-to-day financial operations of MacLachlan College, ensuring the accuracy and integrity of our financial management and reporting, payroll and compliance, budgeting and forecasting, and provide leadership and guidance, overseeing the work of the bookkeeper. This role bridges hands-on accounting with leadership responsibilities, making it ideal for a candidate who thrives in a collaborative, mission-driven environment and can balance detail execution with big-picture oversight.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead full-cycle accounting, including month-end and year-end closes.
  • Prepare accurate financial statements, variance analyses, and board-ready reporting packages.
  • Oversee accounts receivable, including tuition billing and collections.
  • Manage accounts payable and vendor payments.
  • Monitor cash flow, prepare forecasts, and ensure appropriate liquidity.
  • Oversee payroll processes and ensure compliance with government remittances.
  • Ensure timely filing of HST and other statutory reports.
  • Liaise with auditors and external accountants during annual audits.
  • Collaborate with the Head of School and Board Finance Committee to prepare annual budgets.
  • Track actuals to budget and provide timely variance explanations.
  • Provide insights and recommendations to support strategic decision-making.
  • Supervise and support the bookkeeper, ensuring accurate entry of transactions.
  • Develop and maintain strong financial controls and procedures.
  • Act as the primary finance contact for school leadership and the Board.
Skills and Qualifications
  • Post-secondary education with a CPA designation (CA, CMA, CGA, or CPA Canada) preferred.
  • A minimum of 7 years of progressive accounting/finance experience, ideally in education, non-profit, or small-to-mid sized organizations.
  • Proficiency with QuickBooks Online (required).
  • Experience in the education sector, with tuition billing or recurring revenue models is an asset.
  • Strong understanding of Canadian accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations.
  • Excellent communication skills, able to explain financial matters to non-financial stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, prioritize, and take initiative.
