Job summary

The University of Manitoba is seeking a dedicated professional to support students with disabilities. You will identify needs, plan and oversee accommodation plans for 250+ students, and provide crisis intervention when needed.

You will collaborate with academic staff to ensure compliance with policies and timetables. You will also manage medical documentation, maintain records in Aurora, and train staff on accommodations and learning supports.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related discipline required.
  • Master's degree preferred.
  • Certification in a recognized suicide prevention or awareness program is required.

Responsibilities

  • Identify needs and support students with disabilities.
  • Safety planning and crisis intervention, i.e. suicide intervention with students.
  • Oversee accommodation plans for students (250+).
  • Request and evaluate medical documentation from registered health professionals.
  • Manage case files by researching and gathering all relevant materials.
  • Identify and aid students and faculty in addressing systemic, interpersonal and other barriers to a successful academic program.
  • Develop and implement accommodation plans. Attend accommodation team meetings to facilitate plans and provide context for non-standard accommodations requests.
  • Ensure that the University's Bona Fide Academic Requirements will not be compromised.
  • Negotiate reasonable accommodation requests with academic teaching staff.
  • Provide ongoing support to students and academic teaching staff through regular follow up and to review effectiveness of the plan.
  • Provide advice to students regarding leave requests.
  • Provide advice to academic teaching staff regarding the review of extensions to course work.
  • Work with departmental staff to ensure records in the SAS database and in Aurora accurately reflect the student status.
  • Promote positive team interaction between stakeholders, i.e. students, faculty and staff.
  • Tracks and reports on caseload.
  • Interprets University of Manitoba policies and regulations in regards to rights and accommodations.
  • Knowledgeable in PHIA and FIPPA regulations and training.
  • Responsible for training and supervision of work study positions and student staff.
  • Liaise with academic staff to implement accommodation plans.
  • Develop and implement support services around a learning strategies and support program.
  • Invigilate for the SAS exam centre during peak periods.
  • Develop and deliver education and training to staff and students.
  • Maintain up to date knowledge of current developments in human rights legislation and accommodations.
  • Maintains relationships with disability community.

Job description

Work schedule: Monday to Friday, 8:30am-4:30pm, 35.0 hrs/wk

Salary: $31.30 to $44.11 per hourplus vacation pay

Appointment Dates October 31, 2026 to April 30, 2027

Qualifications
MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION/TRAINING:
  • Bachelor's degree in a related discipline required.
  • Master's degree preferred.
  • Certification in a recognized suicide prevention or awareness program is required.
EXPERIENCE:
  • Minimum of three years of directly related experience required.
  • Experience working with accommodation plans and students with disabilities is required.
  • Experience supervising staff is required.
  • Understanding of medical terminology is required.
  • Preference given to candidates with post-secondary experience.
  • Experience in a higher education setting and knowledge of University of Manitoba policies and procedures is preferred.
  • Experience creating mentor plans for persons with disabilities is an asset.
  • An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Counselling skills required.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, teambuilding and communication (oral and written) skills are required.
  • Creative problem solving and attention to detail skills are required.
  • Ability to research literature and conduct online searches on topics related to disability to develop or enhance services and programs is required.
  • Proficiency in using advanced features of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) is required.
  • Must be able to prioritize and to be responsive to stakeholders.
  • Must be able to work independently with minimum direction, as well as be a member of a team.
  • Must be able to oversee staff (train, give directions, establish goals and timelines, provide feedback).
  • Must be able to work effectively with all levels of staff, students and members of the general public from different cultures and generations in a confidential, tactful, polite, respectful and competent manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to cope during highly stressful peak periods is essential.
  • Ability to prepare and facilitate/deliver workshops and presentations is required.
  • Ability to research literature and conduct online searches on topics related to disability to develop or enhance services and programs required.
  • Knowledge of issues affecting Indigenous and International students is preferred.
  • Knowledge of assistive technology (e.g. Dragon and Kurzweil) is preferred.
  • Training and knowledge of Aurora Student is preferred.
  • Connections to community and higher education organizations related to students with disabilities is preferred.
  • Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.

  • Knowledgeable in matters pertaining to PHIA and FIPPA regulations and must have PHIA/FIPPA training.
  • Responsible for the training and supervision of work study positions, Canada summer job positions, student staff.
  • Liaise with academic staff members (faculty) to implement the accommodation plans.
  • Develop and implement support services around a learning strategies and support program.
  • Invigilate for the SAS exam centre during peak periods, (evenings and weekends).
  • Develop and deliver education and training to academic teaching staff, graduate students and on campus and off campus community agencies.
  • Maintain up to date knowledge of current developments in the human rights legislation, bona fide academic requirements, academic accommodation and disability fields.
  • Maintains a working relationship with the disability community.
  • Communicates with other University departments and administrative units, external agencies and acts as a departmental representative on related committees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Director.
