Purpose Of The Position

The ABA Practitioner is a unique position that requires an individual with strong cultural knowledge, appropriate education, and experience to navigate the western ABA field. The goal is to integrate these perspectives to build a culturally based support network for children, youth, and families diagnosed with or suspected of ASD.

This role supports our partnership with Mackenzie Health, which is committed to working alongside our agency to meet the needs of Indigenous children, youth, and families with ASD or suspected ASD. The position reports to the Support Services Supervisor - Clinical Services and is supported by Mackenzie Health’s Clinical Coordinator or a designated Registered Behaviour Analyst.

The ABA Practitioner will conduct holistic assessments and develop treatment recommendations for Indigenous children and youth on the spectrum, applying an Indigenous lens to the work.

Responsibilities

This role primarily supports Indigenous families in the east region, with flexibility to serve across the agency’s full catchment area. It involves fostering relationships through networking and capacity building among staff, families, and community partners to support culturally grounded services.

Clinical
  • Conduct functional behaviour and biopsychosocial assessments under supervision.
  • Identify and build on the child's gifts and strengths, incorporating an Indigenous perspective.
  • Participate in Circle processes to recognize the child's gifts and needs.
  • Ensure the ABA program is family-led, child-centered, and culturally inclusive.
  • Coach caregivers on Behaviour Support Plans, monitor progress, and analyze data.
  • Develop safety plans when necessary.
  • Maintain communication between partner agencies and families.
  • Identify additional holistic needs and facilitate referrals.
  • Help families navigate services and funding options through the Ontario Autism Program.
Workshop Development & Facilitation
  • Deliver workshops using a Two-Eyed Seeing approach for caregivers.
  • Integrate Indigenous and Western knowledge systems.
  • Ensure workshops are culturally sensitive, evidence-based, and practical.
  • Collaborate with Elder/Knowledge Keepers.
Other Responsibilities
  • Assist with baseline data collection and analysis under supervision.
  • Prepare treatment materials for consultations and support providers.
  • Support building a support network around children and families.
