About This Career Opportunity

Black & McDonald’s Calgary Service team is growing! If you are a committed and collaborative professional looking to contribute to a hard-working, innovative team, this opportunity is for you. The 2nd or 3rd Year HVAC/Refrigeration Mechanic is located in Calgary, Alberta reporting to the Division Manager or their designate and requires travel to surrounding areas. The 2nd or 3rd Year HVAC/Refrigeration Mechanic is primarily responsible for the efficient operations and maintenance to a variety of HVAC equipment. The position includes, but is not limited to, installation, identifying the cause of malfunctioning parts/equipment, repair, inspection, etc. Working directly with customers to ensure they are completely satisfied with the work required.

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Perform routine predictive planned maintenance duties
  • Complete work orders and deficiency reports
  • Assemble and install refrigeration and air conditioning components
  • Test heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems for leaks
  • Repair and replace components for entire heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems
  • Reading and interpreting blueprints
  • Handle, recover and store refrigerants
  • Test and repair electronic components
  • Clean evaporator and condenser coils
  • Work on air conditioner/heat pump ductless splits
  • HRV/ERV service and maintenance
  • Roof top unit (RTU) start up and maintenance both in air conditioning and heating season
  • May occasionally be required to work over 40 hours per week and be available for on-call duties
  • Other duties as required

Education Requirements
  • 2nd or 3rd Year Apprentice HVAC/Refrigeration Mechanic
  • Knowledge of a variety of electronic, pneumatic and DDC control systems considered an asset
Skills, Abilities, and Other Requirements
  • Ability to attain and hold a Security clearance
  • Ability to read and work from Mechanical / Electrical drawings, HVAC/R schematics, line drawings, etc
  • Always maintain a professional demeanor with fellow employees and clients
  • A team player, committed to working in a quality environment
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and work on a ladder or scaffold at various heights
  • Valid, clean class 5 Driver’s license
  • Be willing and able to join Local Union 488
