Job summary

Northumberland Ferries Limited in Caribou, NS seeks a 2nd Class Marine Engineer for a full-time, year-round role. The engineer will oversee watch duties, maintenance, and repair of vessel machinery, reporting to the Chief Engineer.

The role requires strong safety, teamwork, and communication skills, with responsibilities spanning PMS, spare parts, logbooks, and compliance with marine regulations. Canadian eligibility is required.

Qualifications

• Valid Certificate of Competency as a 2nd Class Marine Engineer.
• Valid Seafarers Medical Certificate and CoC certificates.
• Working knowledge of critical operations and SMS documentation.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Proven track record of safe operations.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Experience with passenger services (an asset).
• Canadian citizenship or permanent resident status is required for positions in Canada.

Responsibilities

• Act as Engineer of the watch and supervise the engine room during watch periods.
• Perform maintenance, inspections and overhaul of machinery as directed by the Chief Engineer.
• Supervise and delegate work to all personnel assigned to the watch.
• Report defects or irregularities to the Chief Engineer promptly.
• Comply with pollution regulations and environmental policies.
• Maintain vessel machinery spare parts inventory and order parts as needed.
• Keep PMS and Spare Parts Inventory systems updated.
• Maintain accurate logbooks and maintenance records.
• Be familiar with firefighting equipment, alarm systems, and SMS safety protocols.
• Adhere to company policies including safety and workplace rules.
