Job summary

Bay Ferries Limited in Canada is seeking a Marine 2nd Engineer to support safe propulsion and auxiliary systems, ensure regulatory compliance, and maintain high safety standards. Reporting to the Chief Engineer, you will stand watches, troubleshoot issues, and contribute to continuous improvement in a team-focused environment.

You will work a day-for-day rotation (1 week on/1 week off) and collaborate across departments to ensure smooth vessel operations while maintaining operational readiness

Qualifications

  • Requires Transport Canada Second Class Motor Certificate of Competency.
  • Must hold Transport Canada Marine Medical Certificate.
  • Must hold Marine Emergency Duties (MED) certification.
  • PSM certification or ability to obtain.
  • WHMIS certification required.
  • Eligible to obtain all Company training and certifications.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in safe operation, monitoring, and maintenance of propulsion, auxiliary, electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical systems.
  • Stand engineering watches per procedures and Transport Canada regulations.
  • Monitor machinery performance and troubleshoot equipment issues.
  • Complete preventative maintenance and repairs using the Company's PLanned maintenance system.
  • Maintain engineering logs, maintenance records, and operational documentation.
  • Assist with bunkering operations and environmental protection procedures.
  • Respond to machinery alarms, equipment failures, and emergency situations.
  • Ensure compliance with Company policies, TC regulations, ISM Code and environmental standards.
  • Promote a safety culture by participating in drills and training.
  • Provide guidance to junior engineering personnel.
  • Collaborate with onboard departments to support safe vessel operations.
  • Demonstrate commitment to a just-cause safety culture.

Job description

Position Summary

Reporting to the Chief Engineer, the Marine 2nd Engineer is responsible for assisting in the safe, efficient, and reliable operation and maintenance of the vessel's propulsion machinery, auxiliary equipment, electrical systems. The successful candidate will contribute to maintaining operational readiness while ensuring compliance with Transport Canada regulations, Company policies, and the International Safety Management (ISM) Code.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in the safe operation, monitoring, and maintenance of the vessel's propulsion, auxiliary, electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical systems.
  • Stand engineering watches in accordance with Company procedures and Transport Canada regulations.
  • Monitor machinery performance and troubleshoot equipment issues as required.
  • Complete preventative maintenance and repairs using the Company's planned maintenance system.
  • Maintain accurate engineering logs, maintenance records, and operational documentation.
  • Assist with bunkering operations and environmental protection procedures.
  • Respond to machinery alarms, equipment failures, and emergency situations.
  • Ensure compliance with Company policies, Transport Canada regulations, ISM Code requirements, and environmental standards.
  • Promote a strong safety culture by participating in emergency drills, safety meetings, and ongoing training.
  • Provide guidance and support to junior engineering personnel as required.
  • Work collaboratively with all onboard departments to support safe and efficient vessel operations.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to maintaining a just-cause safety culture
Qualifications

Applicants must possess:

  • Transport Canada Second Class Motor Certificate of Competency
  • Valid Transport Canada Marine Medical Certificate
  • Valid Marine Emergency Duties (MED) certification
  • Passenger Safety Management (PSM) certification (or ability to obtain)
  • Valid WHMIS certification
  • Eligibility to obtain all Company-required training and certifications
