1.0 FTE Indigenous Graduation Coach (10 month permanent position)

The Northwest Catholic District School Board is a system committed to Catholic Education. The Board serves the communities of Dryden, Fort Frances, Sioux Lookout, Atikokan and Stratton in Northwestern Ontario. The Board operates five elementary schools, serving a total of approximately 1300 students.

The Northwest Catholic District School Board invites applications for the position of Indigenous Graduation Coach, located at Sacred Heart School, commencing as soon as possible.

The Indigenous Graduation Coach will be a central caring adult within the school community who supports Indigenous students in their educational journey from elementary through to successful transition into secondary school. They support Indigenous students, families, school and community to connect resources to meet each student's needs. As an integral member of the school's Student Success team, the Indigenous Graduation Coach collaborates with School Administration, classroom educators and the Indigenous Education Lead to ensure culturally responsive, student-centered supports are available for Indigenous learners.

Duties:
  • Identify and address barriers to better enable Indigenous students to engage in school, to facilitate individual learning, well being and achievement.
  • Facilitate transitions for Indigenous students – whether entering the school, progressing between grades or moving on to secondary school, ensuring each student has a clear, supported path forward.
  • Support Indigenous students in their academic, social, emotional and cultural development through mentorship, regular check-ins and support plans.
  • Further establish trusting relationships with Indigenous students, their families and communities to support strong home, community, school and parish relationships.
  • Support school staff in building strong school-community connections and integrating culturally relevant and appropriate Indigenous perspectives and local history into classroom learning and nutrition break programming to support truth and reconciliation.
  • With the support team, identify strategies, milestones and indicators to support Indigenous students to achieve their academic goals, attend and engage in school and school community, transition into school, throughout grades and secondary schools.
Required Qualifications:
  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent, Degree or Diploma in Social Sciences, Indigenous Studies, First Nations Family Support, or an equivalent combination of education and experience working with and supporting Indigenous children and families.
  • Must be familiar with First Nations, Metis and Inuit cultures within our region and must possess extensive experience working with First Nation, Metis and Inuit students, their families and communities within Northwestern Ontario.
  • Have knowledge of the Ojibwe language.
  • Possess strong organizational skills and the willingness to be flexible and work cooperatively with others.
  • Must have a valid Ontario driver's license and the ability to travel.
Salary/Benefits:

$69,660 to $76,055 (dependent upon experience and qualifications). We also offer a comprehensive and generous benefit package including personal leave and enrollment into the OMERS Pension Plan.
