Job summary

Six Nations of the Grand River is seeking a Land-Based Program Coordinator for Maternal Child and Youth Health. The role reports to the Team Manager and focuses on developing and delivering land-based activities, coordinating workshops, and collaborating with Cultural Advisors.

Requires a College Diploma in outdoor education or related field or equivalent experience; valid Ontario G Driver’s Licence; boat license or willingness to obtain; ORCKA/Paddle Canada training; First Aid/CPR; strong

Qualifications

  • College diploma in outdoor education, environmental studies, science or related fields with three (3) years’ demonstrated skills in land and water-based activities and leadership/program development.
  • High School Diploma with eight (8) years’ experience in land and water-based activities including hunting, fishing, canoeing, building structures, and land/resource preservation.
  • Must possess a valid Ontario Class G Driver’s Licence and be willing to travel; boat license or willingness to obtain; ORCKA/Paddle Canada trained or willingness to obtain; First Aid/CPR; knowledge of Hodinohshoni/Rotinonhsion:ni culture.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in development and implementation of wellness model and trauma-informed care using culture as foundation.
  • Fulfill Workplace Health and Safety Committee responsibilities and ensure staff adherence to safety practices.
  • Plan, organize and coordinate cultural workshops and land-based activities for clients and staff.
  • Provide staff training and participate in ongoing training with Hodinohshoni/Rotinonhsion:ni knowledge.
  • Coordinate and supervise student placements and summer employment when applicable.
  • Collaborate with Manager and Cultural Advisors to align facilities with program goals.

Position Description – Department of Wellbeing

POSITION TITLE: Land-Based Program Coordinator – Maternal Child and Youth Health

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:

Reports to and works under the direction and supervision of the Maternal Child and Youth Health Team Manager which includes matters pertaining to the policies and procedures of Six Nations Elected Council.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

College Diploma in outdoor education, environmental studies, science or related fields with three (3) years’ demonstrated skills in land and water-based activities as well as demonstrated skills/experience in leadership and/or program development

OR

  • High School Diploma with a minimum of eight (8) years’ experience undertaking land and water-based activities which include, but not limited to; hunting, fishing, canoeing, building structure, preservation of land and its natural resources, gardening, tree & plant identification, etc.
  • Must possess a valid Ontario Class G Driver’s Licence and be willing to travel.
  • Possess a boat license; or willingness to obtain
  • ORCKA or Paddle Canada trained; or willingness to obtain

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Technical Functions:
  • Assist in the development and implementation of the Hodi:noshoni/ Rotinonhsion:ni Wellness Model and trauma-informed care using culture as foundation for the development of land-based services and programs.
  • Fulfills the role of Workplace Health and Safety Committee Representative and ensures all staff adhere to Health and Safety practices and protocols
  • Ensure appropriate use of land and water-based skill that is respectful of Hodi:nohshoni/ Rotinonhsion:ni knowledge and practice.
  • Utilize culturally safe and evidence informed practice principles
  • Adhere to safe handling and operational practices when facilitating land and water-based activities that have a high potential for serious risk, harm, or injury
  • Participate in program development and accreditation activities
  • Assist in the development and facilitation of land-based activities that support the development of effective coping strategies and build resilience
  • Plans, organizes and coordinates cultural workshops, programming and activities, teachings and practices for clients and staff as required
  • Assists in staff training as required
  • Engages in ongoing training and learning opportunities with Hodi:nohshoni/ Rotinonhsion:ni knowledge and practice.
  • Acts in a professionally appropriate manner both when working and not working, and is a positive role model for clients and staff
  • Provides opportunities for student employment and student placements with the team by providing functional supervision for appropriate student placements and summer student employment relevant to position.
  • Works collaboratively with Team Manager to ensure buildings and grounds maintenance and plans align with program activities and goals
  • In collaboration with the Manager and Cultural Advisors, determines the priority of work.
  • May be required to work evenings, nights or weekends when required
Communications Functions:
  • Works closely with Cultural Advisors and other applicable services to support programming from a Hodi:nohshoni/ Rotinonhsion:ni knowledge and practice
  • Utilizes ethical, culturally appropriate principles throughout programming and communicating with community partners, participants, knowledge keepers and facilitators.
  • Attends case conferences, as required to provide input in order to coordinate care and optimize client outcomes
  • Attend monthly Health and Safety Committee Meetings and communicate updates as needed
  • Attend training as required/requested and deliver summary of training in staff meetings
  • Represents Maternal Child & Youth Health at community events in accordance with Six Nations Elected Council Policies and Procedures
  • Provides updates and reports to the Team Manager as requested
Administrative Functions:
  • Attend team meetings as required
  • Accountable for submission of all invoices related to daily work functions
  • Responsible for implementation of appropriate inventory log and equipment use log
  • Prepares monthly narrative report to Team Manager
  • Reviews and provides Activity Plans to Manager prior to implementing new programming.
  • Supports the development of Seasonal Program Binders that include completed activity plans, costs and facilitator information.
  • Supports the development of program calendars grounded in Onkwehonwe’neha – original ways of being, knowing and doing
  • Supports program enhancements by regularly conducting activity evaluations aimed at identifying successes, opportunities for improvement and overall impact.
  • Maintains statistics relevant to the position, fulfills annual work plan activities and documents required information.
  • Take lead on coordinating and executing existing land-based programming.
Other Functions:
  • Provide support to program development and planning as advised by the Team Manager
  • Performs other job related duties as may reasonably be required by the Team Manager.
  • Will provide support to the Six Nations Emergency Measures Plan by ensuring awareness of the Emergency Measures Plan and assistance as instructed by the Director of Wellbeing
  • It is the responsibility of the employee to be aware of and adhere to all policies and procedures, including those that relate to client safety, staff safety and risk management.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Work as a high public profile, extensive public contact and is subject to deadlines and interruptions.
  • Work as part of a team to support and deliver land-based activities and healing.
  • Work will include activities outdoors in all elements, appropriate attire required.
  • Work may at times be subject to unscheduled hours, including on-call and weekend coverage as well as programming, when necessary.
  • Intermediate stress; required high degree of confidentiality.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
  • College Diploma in outdoor education, environmental studies, science or related fields with three (3) years’ demonstrated skills in land and water-based activities as well as demonstrated skills/experience in leadership and/or program development
