Job Title: Land Survey Field Technician
Experience: 2-5+ years
Salary Range: $20-$25
Employment Type: Full-time (four 10-hour workdays per week)

Job Overview:
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Land Survey Field Technician to join our team. The technician will perform surveying and mapping work, measuring and recording data on land, utilities, structures, roads, and other permanent features. This position offers an opportunity to work on a variety of projects across the state, with occasional out-of-state travel for extended periods.

Position Responsibilities:

  1. Surveying and Data Collection:
  2. Visit project sites to take precise measurements and record survey data related to land, utilities, structures, and roads.
  3. Perform conventional leveling surveys and assist with GPS data collection to determine elevations.
  4. Search for, recover, and set existing survey markers (e.g., stones, iron rods, pipes), and set stakes to mark locations.
  5. Data Processing:
  6. Import, store, and process surveying data collected in the field, and assist licensed surveyors in analyzing the data.
  7. Take complete and accurate field notes and maintain organized field books.
  8. Physical Labor and Fieldwork:
  9. Clear lines using a brusher or chain saw, swamping as needed (not a daily requirement unless assigned to range line projects).
  10. Dig for boundary points, set rebar with a sledgehammer (weighing up to 8 lbs), and perform physical tasks that involve frequent bending, kneeling, lifting, and carrying.
  11. Hike, climb, and balance in rough, uneven terrain for extended periods, often covering distances of 0.5 to 2 miles or more.
  12. Frequently lift and carry 25-50 lbs of equipment such as scanners, stakes, nails, or rebar; occasionally required to lift up to 75 lbs.
  13. Work in remote areas with exposure to outdoor elements, including extreme temperatures, wildlife, and varying weather conditions (sun, rain, snow, wind).
  14. Project Assistance:
  15. Assist surveyors in collecting data for various surveys, including ALTA, topographic, boundary, and utility surveys.
  16. Utilize GPS and robotic systems for data collection, perform 3-wire differential leveling, and maintain detailed documentation.

Desired Skills and Expertise:

  1. Basic computer skills, including familiarity with Outlook, Excel, Office, and Trimble Business Center.
  2. Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  3. Innovation, problem-solving, and a strong work ethic.
  4. Self-motivated with the ability to work independently.
  5. Strong organizational and note-taking skills, along with attention to detail.
  6. Ability to follow instructions and work under general supervision with moderate latitude for independent judgment.

Qualifications:

  1. Physical Requirements:
  2. Ability to lift and carry 25-50 lbs frequently, and up to 75 lbs occasionally.
  3. Capable of performing physically demanding tasks, including standing, kneeling, bending, and hiking in rough terrain.
  4. Technical Knowledge:
  5. Experience in surveying and mapping principles.
  6. Familiarity with GPS and Trimble software (global positioning systems and Trimble Business center/Trimble access applications).
  7. Education & Experience:
  8. High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  9. Experience in surveying and mapping work (experience and education may be substituted for one another).
  10. Other Requirements:
  11. Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain one.
  12. Must pass pre-employment drug screening and background check.
  13. Must obtain first aid and CPR certifications.
  14. Frequent travel and ability to work in remote areas, with exposure to extreme weather conditions and challenging terrains.
  15. Four 10-hour workdays per week, with potential for extended workweeks and out-of-state travel.
