Vrije Universiteit Brussel invites applications for a Professor in History of International Law. The role focuses on leadership, research, and teaching across an international program with a strong emphasis on supervision of Master theses and high-quality publications.

The appointee will conduct research, seek external funding, organize seminars, and contribute to governance within the faculty. English-taught components may be included, with a 0.3 FTE assignment for 3 years.

Qualifications

• Doctor in law with publication and/or external funding track record commensurate with assistant professor level.

Education and Research domain:

History of International Law

• You coordinate and supervise the VUB participation to the EUTOPIA Connected Learning Community Legal History;
• You supervise and evaluate Master theses in Law;
• You occasionally guest lecture, in English, in other courses.

Research tasks:

You conduct and high-quality research in the field of History of International Law.

This entails:

• Publishing in national and international peer-reviewed journals and edited volumes;
• Conducting and autonomously managing (internally and/or externally funded) research projects;
• Applying for and securing external research funding;
• Organising seminars and conferences;
• Supervising PhD candidates;
• Building and maintaining a relevant scientific network.

Other tasks:

Contributing to the governance of the faculty RC, department JURI, and research group CORE.

For this function, our Brussels Humanities, Sciences & Engineering Campus (Elsene)will serve as your home base.

3 - Profile

What do we expect from you?

• Doctor in law
• A publication and/or external funding track record commensurate with the level of an assistant professor position;
• Ambition and potential to apply for an ERC Grant, in accordance with the policy of the VUB research council;
• Teaching experience or demonstrable aptitude in working with a diverse and international student population;
• Experience or demonstrable aptitude in Blended Learning;
• Demonstrable potential to further solidify the succesful and established Connected Learning Community Legal History (2021-…) within EUTopia with core partners CY Cergy Paris Université, University of Warwick en Univerza v Ljubljani and the varying partners Universitat Pompeu Fabra en Universidade Nova de Lisboa;

• Every first appointment is dependent upon the successful delivery of a teaching session.

Language regulations:

A member of the academic staff who is entrusted with a teaching assignment must also be able to demonstrate that the language of instruction is known at ERK level C1 through a qualification certificate or through an adequate diploma. The VUB also provides courses in, for example, academic English.

The administrative language of the VUB is Dutch. In case of insufficient knowledge of Dutch, the VUB will provide an integration course. After a maximum of five years, a member of the academic staff must demonstrate adequate knowledge of the administrative language (ERK level B2).

Certificates demonstrating knowledge of the language can already be added to the application.

4 - Offer

Are you going to be our new colleague?

You’ll be offered an appointment as professor, for an assignment of 0,3FTE, for 3 years (renewable, on condition of the positive evaluation of the activities), with planned starting date 1 February 2027.

You’ll receive a salary linked to one of the scales set by the government.
