Vrije Universiteit Brussel is seeking a PhD student to develop bio-cemented mycelium-based composites for sustainable construction. The research spans microbiology, materials science and architectural engineering in a multidisciplinary team at Brussels Campus (Elsene).

The position offers a full-time PhD scholarship with 12 months initial funding, extendable up to 48 months, starting 01/11/2026, with a government-linked stipend and open and inclusive working environment.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in biotechnology, bioengineering sciences, materials science, architectural engineering, chemical engineering or related field.
• You are motivated to conduct research and complete a PhD within a 4-year timeframe.
• You have basic knowledge of or experience with microbiological techniques and fungal/bacterial cultivation.
• You have strong English communication skills.

Responsabilités

• Develop protocols for growth and bio-cementation of mycelium-based composites.
• Study growth conditions, process parameters and evaluate mechanical performance.
• Contribute to teaching activities within the Architectural Engineering department.
