Atlas Copco Group in Wilrijk, Belgium, is seeking a Mechanical Engineer – Centrifugal Compressors to help develop next‑generation technologies. You will collaborate with specialists across disciplines from concept through prototype validation to field support, addressing robust rotating equipment design and maintaining engineering BOMs.
The role combines hands‑on testing with advanced analysis in a hybrid setup, with occasional international travel.
Our experienced team develops centrifugal compressors that are used worldwide. We pride ourselves on delivering some of the most energy-efficient compressor solutions on the market. With rated powers of up to 6300 kW per compressor, even small improvements can have a significant impact on energy consumption and sustainability.
Besides product development, we continuously invest in research and technology development to remain at the forefront of our industry. Our projects range from clean-sheet product development to upgrades of existing products and disruptive innovations in collaboration with universities, research institutes and industrial partners.
We are passionate about technology and continuously push boundaries through advanced engineering methods, multidisciplinary optimization and close collaboration across departments and regions. Working in our team means contributing directly to a more sustainable future while continuously learning and growing as an engineer.
As a Mechanical Engineer – Centrifugal Compressors, you will play a key role in the development of next-generation centrifugal compressor technologies and products. You will work closely with specialists from various engineering disciplines throughout the complete product development cycle: from concept generation and technology development to prototype validation, product release and field support.
You combine strong analytical skills with sound engineering judgment. You are able to translate complex technical challenges into robust and practical design solutions. You can independently evaluate design concepts, identify risks, challenge assumptions and contribute to well-founded engineering decisions.
Mechanical design and analysis are at the core of your expertise. You are comfortable sizing and validating critical rotating equipment components such as shafts, gears, rolling-element bearings and hydrodynamic bearings. You are experienced in performing engineering calculations, finite element analyses and rotor dynamic assessments to ensure reliable and performant product designs. You also enjoy working on complex engineering challenges and are not afraid to get hands-on when needed. Whether supporting prototype assembly, investigating field failures or validating a new design concept, you are driven by understanding how things work and how they can be improved.
You have a structured and detail-oriented approach to engineering. You understand the importance of product architecture, configuration control and design documentation. You help maintain accurate product structures, manage engineering BOMs and ensure designs are properly documented for future generations of products.
Risk management is an integral part of your engineering approach. You are familiar with design reviews, DFMEA methodologies and engineering best practices, and you use them to improve product robustness and reliability.
You communicate clearly and effectively with colleagues from different technical backgrounds. You can explain complex concepts, document your findings and provide constructive feedback on designs and technical proposals.
In the world of centrifugal compressors, breakthroughs rarely come from easy opportunities. Success comes from deep technical understanding, meticulous engineering and relentlessly pursuing improvements that create value for customers. If that challenge motivates you, we would love to hear from you.
You will report to the Team Leader Centrifugal Compressors and work in a hybrid setup from our site in Wilrijk. Occasional international travel may be required.
