University of Antwerp is seeking a doctoral assistant in interior architecture within the Interior Architecture programme. You will join the Academic Assistant Staff, dedicating at least 50% of your time to research while actively contributing to teaching and service activities.

You will conduct research on interior design theory and history, publish findings, and assist in ongoing projects within the A+I research group.

Qualifications

  • PhD in interior architecture or architecture completed or to be completed by start date.
  • Strong research profile in interior design theory/history.
  • Teaching abilities aligned with university vision.
  • Evidence of publications, exhibitions, or completed interiors.

Responsabilités

  • Conduct high-quality research in interior design theory/history.
  • Publish results in peer-reviewed venues and reports.
  • Assist in ongoing research projects and contribute to A+I group activities.
  • Provide teaching support and deliver high-quality classes.
  • Supervise Master’s thesis preparation and contribute to programme components.
  • Engage in student recruitment and outreach activities.

The Faculty of Design Sciences is seeking to fill the following full-time vacancy in the Interior Architecture programme: doctoral assistant in the field of interior architecture

Position

As a doctoral assistant, you are part of the Academic Assistant Staff (Dutch: Assisterend Academisch Personeel, AAP). You will spend at least 50% of your working time on academic research. In addition, you will actively contribute to education and service activities.

Research

  • You carry out high-quality scientific research in the field of interior design theory and history.
  • You compete to obtain externally funded research grants, including an FWO-postdoc application.
  • You valorise your research and use your personal research expertise in the further development of research in the field of interior design theory and history.
  • You report on the results of your research and produce academic publications.
  • You will assist in ongoing research projects, should there be a need for your postdoctoral expertise.
  • You actively contribute to the activities of the research group A+I .

Education

  • You will provide support with teaching and also teach high-quality academic classes yourself.
  • You will provide and/or support in the following programme components: Interior History & Theory 1, Academic Skills 2, Lab Initiation and Design Lab 1. Depending on the needs of the programme, the educational tasks may change in the future.
  • You will play a role in developing activating, student-centred and competence-driven programme components and study programmes.
  • You will supervise students in the preparation of their Master's thesis

Services

  • You will play an active role in the academic and societal service provision of the interior architecture programme.
  • You will contribute to student recruitment (SID-ins, info days).

Profile

  • You hold a doctorate degree (PhD) in interior architecture or architecture, or you will have obtained it by the time you start work.
  • Your research qualities are in line with the faculty and university research policies . You have relevant research experience in the field of interior design theory and history.
  • Your teaching competences are in line with the University of Antwerp's educational vision .
  • You have expertise in the field of interior architecture and can demonstrate this through academic output, such as publications, exhibitions or completed interior design realisations
  • You have experience in publishing in well-ranked peer-reviewed journals and conferences.
  • Experience in studio education in interior architecture is recommended, as well as a few years of relevant experience in the design practice.
  • If you do not speak Dutch, the administrative language of the university, you should be willing to obtain a CEFR B2 level of proficiency in Dutch. As soon as you take on teaching duties as a programme component coordinator, you should be able to demonstrate a CEFR C1 level of proficiency in the language of instruction. What we offer

  • We offer an appointment as a doctoral assistant for a period of three years. Following a positive evaluation, the appointment can be renewed once.
  • Your gross monthly salary is calculated according to the pay scale for a doctoral assistant (Academic Assistant Staff, AAP).
  • You will receive ecocheques, Internet-connectivity allowance and a bicycle allowance or a full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting.
  • The planned date of appointment is 1 February 2027
  • You will do most of your work at the City Campus, site Mutsaard, in a dynamic and stimulating working environment.
