VASS BRUSSELS is seeking an Expert Data & AI Engineer to work from the European Commission, contributing to data engineering, architecture, and analytics initiatives.

The role requires hands-on experience with ETL/ELT, data lakes and warehouses, and modern data platforms such as Microsoft Fabric and Azure services. You will handle structured and unstructured data, build end-to-end pipelines, and collaborate across stakeholders to enable advanced analytics and AI applications.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant field.
• Experience designing and implementing data pipelines (ETL/ELT).
• Strong knowledge of data lake and data warehouse architectures.
• Experience with modern data platforms (e.g. Microsoft Fabric, Azure ecosystem).
• Experience handling structured and unstructured data.
• Ability to build end-to-end data pipelines for reporting and analytics.
• Knowledge of data governance and metadata techniques.

VASS BeNeLux, in partnership with the European Commission, is currently seeking an Expert Data & AI Engineer to work from the European Commission.

The role:

Required Experience & Skills (Must-Have)

• Data Engineering & Architecture
• Proven experience in designing and implementing data pipelines (ETL/ELT)
• Strong knowledge of data lake / data warehouse architectures
• Experience with modern data platforms (e.g. Microsoft Fabric, Azure ecosystem, Open

Source data platforms)

• Handling Structured & Unstructured Data (Critical Requirement)
• Demonstrated experience in handling and integrating:
• Structured data (databases, tabular datasets)
• Unstructured data (documents, reports, PDFs, text corpora)
• Ability to build pipelines enabling end-to-end exploitation of heterogeneous data
• Experience preparing data for reporting and advanced analytics
• Ability to structure unstructured information using metadata, classification, and transformation techniques

• Analytics & AI
• Experience with analytics development and data modelling
• Exposure to AI / ML solutions, particularly on text or document-based data
• Understanding of explainability and traceability principles
• Engineering Practices
• Knowledge of DevOps / CI-CD / pipeline automation
• Ability to deliver in multi-stakeholder environments

• Nice-to-Have Skills
• Experience with classified or restricted environments (EUCI or equivalent) =
• Familiarity with Microsoft Purview or similar governance tools
• Experience with:
• Data catalogues and business glossaries
• Cross-domain data handling
• Hybrid or sovereign cloud environments
• Experience in public sector / defence / EU institutions
• Experience in AI explainability or human-in-the-loop systems
