UCLouvain invites applications for a full-time academic position in Interpreting across its Louvain-la-Neuve and Brussels campuses. This role combines teaching, research and community service in interpreting studies within the Faculty of Philosophy, Arts and Letters and the Institute for Language and Communication.

You will develop research programmes, supervise PhD theses, and contribute to the faculty’s international visibility, while participating in governance and service activities.

Qualifications

• PhD in Interpreting Studies (spoken and/or sign languages).
• Proven track record in university teaching with possible evaluations.
• Publications of international standing.
• Extended stay or significant experience abroad outside the awarding institution.
• Professional experience in interpreting and/or interpreting accreditation is an asset; LSFB knowledge is an asset for sign languages.

Responsabilités

• Teach mainly in interpreting studies and related master’s courses; supervise internships and Master’s theses.
• Develop research activities including leading programmes in interpreting, conference interpreting, community interpreting, legal interpreting, or crisis interpreting; supervise PhD theses.
• Carry out service activities within the institution such as committees or management roles within the faculty or research institute.

Within theFaculty of Philosophy, Arts and Letters (FIAL) and theInstitute for Language and Communication (ILC), Social Sciences and Humanities Sector, this position will include the following teaching, research and community service duties:

• Teaching

You will teach mainly in the field ofinterpreting,in particular interpreting studies and introduction tointerpreting research, interpreting ethics, and conference interpreting from Dutch, English, German,Russian,Spanish, orsign language interpreting,mainlyin the variousmaster’scourses managed by the faculty. You will also be expected to supervise interpreting internships and Master’s theses.

• Research

You will develop your research activities, including the lead of research programmes in the field of interpreting, and particularly conference interpreting, community interpreting, legal interpreting or crisis interpreting, for spoken and/or sign languages. You will be responsible for the supervision of PhD theses.

Once tenured, you will carry out various service activities and responsibilities within the institution, such as being a member of a programme committee or examination committee, or having management responsibilities within the faculty or research institute.

You will also contribute to serving society, particularly in the economic, social, cultural or development cooperation fields. Finally, you will ensure, through research and teaching activities, the university’s international visibility.

Who we’re looking for

• Education

You have a PhD in Interpreting Studies (spoken and/or sign languages).

• Experience

You have a proven track record in university teaching, with evidence where possible by formal evaluations. Your scientific experience is demonstrated by publications of international standing.

You have supplemented this with an extended stay or significant experience abroad, outside the institution that awarded your doctorate.

A professional experience in interpreting and/or interpreting accreditation is an asset. For sign languages, knowledge of LSFB is an asset.

• Skills

You are comfortable working as part of a team of academics and integrate research results into your teaching. You are capable of conducting high-level scientific research, from obtaining funding to team management. You are creative, open to pedagogical innovation and multidisciplinary.

You can communicate in French and English. You are able to teach interpreting into French to students whose main language is French.

• Tenure after positive assessment of the probationary period – typically four years. This type of career entitles you to a public sector pension.
• Appointment as lecturer or professor according to your previous academic experience, as determined by the Rectoral Council.
• Teaching load capped at 90 hours for a full-time tenure-track position, and 150 hours once tenured.
